Police Increase Enforcement of Cell Phone Ban

Lake Forest Police will step up effort to educate drivers before enforcement becomes more stringent.

That is the day the Lake Forest Police Department, along with law enforcement agencies in Deerfield, Highland Park, Waukegan, Winnetka, Evanston and Chicago, will make a concerted week long effort to educate drivers about the ban on

Lake Bluff does not have an ordinance limiting the use of cellular phones while driving except the statewide ban in school and construction zones, according to Lake Bluff Police Chief Bill Gallagher.

“We hope with the timing in the surrounding communities it will help education and enforcement during the week,” Deputy Lake Forest Police Chief Karl Walldorf said. “We’re going to do it again in June and before the school year starts again.”

There will be two more week long efforts. One will be at the end of the current school year and the other just before the next term starts. There will also be increased enforcement of a statewide ban on cell phone use in school or construction zones.

Like his colleagues in neighboring communities, Walldorf hopes there will be a statewide ban to equalize enforcement all over.
