Which Town Has Most Traffic Lawbreakers?

In Patch test, Deerfield drivers are most obedient while Highland Park has more motorists who drive through intersections with pedestrians in them. Lake Forest drivers are in the middle.

The moment a pedestrian steps into a crosswalk drivers are required to come to a stop and let the person get all the way across the street, according to Illinois law.

The problem is drivers often fail to obey the requirement. On Tuesday, Patch took one minute videos in downtown Highland Park, Lake Forest and Deerfield to see how well drivers have adjusted to this requirement which marks its two-year anniversary at the end of the year.

In Highland Park, seven drivers failed to stop for pedestrians crossing the intersection of Second Street and Central Avenue in a one-minute span. The walker included an adult leading several young children and a woman pushing a stroller.

A little later that day in Lake Forest, four drivers—with a sign explaining the law in front of them at the corner of Bank Lane and Deerpath Road—failed to stop for walkers in 60 seconds.

Deerfield was another story a little later at the intersection of Waukegan and Deerfield Roads. Patch waited 30 minutes before it found a car failing to stop when a pedestrian entered the crosswalk. It was only one.

While Patch had to wait half an hour in Deerfield, we needed less than five minutes before starting the video in Deerfield or Highland Park.
