County Validates Religion of Man Wanting to Open Meditation Center Near Lake Forest

Unincorporated Lake Forest home was converted into meditation center last fall, reports the Lake County News-Sun.

Lake County's first Maum Meditation Center could open inside a home in unincorporated Lake Forest now that the county has conceded the practice of Maum is a valid religious institution, reported the Lake County News-Sun.

Sheehung "Erik" Sung had filed a federal lawsuit against Lake County after it refused to recognize his practice as a real religion when he sought to host home gatherings, according to the News-Sun. Now, the county has reversed its decision, paving the way for Sung to apply for the necessary permits open a center in his home, located at 24460 Elm Rd., near Lake Forest.

Maum Meditation was founded in South Korea in 1996 by Woo Myung. The practice involves reaching enlightenment by cleansing the mind and body, according to Maum Meditation Chicago.

There are 339 meditation centers around the world. In Illinois, centers are located in Glenview, Lakeview and Naperville.
