District 12 County Board: Rummel Wins Republican Nomination Easily

Helton believes name recognition was the difference.

After being out of an elected office since 2009, former Lake Forest Mayor Mike Rummel is back as the Republican nominee in the Lake County District 12 race, defeating fellow Lake Forest resident Scott Helton Tuesday night.

District 12 represents Lake Forest. Knollwood and parts of Highland Park and Deerfield.

Rummel earned 60 percent of the vote compared to Helton's 39 percent. The two candidates stuck to issues in debates and often agreed on several, including the future of Route 53, Winchester House and the Fort Sheridan Golf Course.

"Scott and I ran a really good race," Rummel said. "This race was about issues and how we were going to get to the end."

Helton believes the difference was Rummel's elected past.

"Name recognition was the difference," Helton said. "He's tough to beat."

Rummel must wait to see who his Democratic opponent will be.

"This was a warmup," Rummel said. "Now we got a battle."

Helton believes this will be his last run. He was set to fly out to South Carolina Friday for a vacation.

"I'll be surprised if I run again," said Helton, 61. "This was a job I really wanted."
