Historical Photo Answer: World War I Soldier From Lake Forest Is Colonel William F. Thorpe

Colonel William F. Thorpe opened a semi-military school for boys, ages 6-16 called Thorpe Academy in 1919, shortly after his discharge from World War I.

Thorpe Academy was located on seven acres at Sheridan Road and Spruce Avenue. The headmaster’s residence once housed the Anderson Strawberry Farm. It closed in the mid-1930s because of financial difficulties.
