Lake County Treasurer Won't Seek Re-Election

Robert Skidmore, who was first elected Lake County Treasurer in 1998, has announced he will not seek re-election in 2014.

After 15 years as Lake County Treasurer and 30 years with Lake County government, Robert Skidmore has announced that he will not be seeking re-election in 2014, according to a press release.

"It's been an honor and a privilege serving Lake County residents. I'm very proud of the progress we've achieved in the treasurer's office. I want to thank the employees for their support and their dedication to serving taxpayers."

Skidmore, a Highland Park native who lives with his family in Mundelein, started working in treasurer's office in 1984 as a cashier. He decided to run for the county-wide elected office and was elected in 1998.

Skidmore said that with advancements in technology, the office has made it easier and more efficient for taxpayers to get information and make payments.

"People can use our website to find property tax information for current and previous years, make online payments by credit card and e-check, and sign up for email notifications to stay connected with deadlines and other time sensitive information," he said.

"We've also improved the collection and distribution process, significantly reducing the time it takes to distribute funds to taxing districts."

During these challenging economic times, many residents have found it even more difficult to pay their property taxes. Skidmore said that he has made it a priority to provide compassionate assistance to the public by allowing late payments, while still following the state statutes that dictate collection of tax bill payments.
