Lake Forest Passes on Assault Weapon Regulation

Mayor and City Council decide not to place measure on Monday's agenda.

Lake Forest will not use its home rule power to regulate assault weapons and a resolution tabled at the July 1 City Council meeting will not be on the agenda when the Council convenes at 7:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall, according to City Manager Robert Kiely.

After the Illinois General Assembly overrode Gov. Patrick Quinn’s Veto of the state’s conceal carry law Tuesday, Lake Forest had until July 19 to regulate assault weapons under its home rule power. The new legislation put that deadline on home rule municipalities like Lake Forest.

“Lake Forest will allow the 10 days to lapse without taking up an ordinance pursuant to (the conceal carry law allowed under) the City’s home rule authority,” Kiely said. “The mayor and City Council do not think it is appropriate to control assault weapons in Lake Forest.”

Kiely said Mayor Don Schoenheider would talk about the issue at Monday’s City Council meeting.

The Council discussed the issue and heard from a room full of residents as well as state Rep. Scott Drury (D-Highwood) during its July 1 meeting.
