Lake Forest Ties 150th Anniversary Events to Earth Week Awareness

Starts Thursday and runs through the following week.

The City of Lake Forest celebrates 150 years with Earth Week. Starting Thursday (April 21) and running through April 29, several events are scheduled  

Upcoming Special events: 

  • Thursday through Saturday, April 21-23. Lake Forest Open Lands Association presents, “Johnny Appleseed” at Mellody Farm Nature Preserve. Celebrate art and nature when Citadel Theater performs. Snacks provided by Whole Foods Market-Deerfield.  Advanced tickets for purchase tickets at www.citadeltheatre.org.
  • 7 p.m. Thursday (April 21). Lake Forest College hosts environmental speaker, Mike Ableman at Lake Forest College Chapel.  Michael Ableman is a farmer, educator, and the founder and executive director emeritus of the Center for Urban Agriculture, where he farmed from 1981 -2001. He is the author and photographer of From the Good Earth (Abrams, 1993), On Good Land (Chronicle Books, 1998), and Fields of Plenty (Chronicle Books 2005) and the subject of the award winning PBS film, Beyond Organic, narrated by Meryl Streep. Ableman has received numerous awards for his advocacy and work in sustainable agriculture and he has helped to inspire dozens of projects and initiatives throughout North America.
  • 7 p.m. Friday (April 22). The City of Lake Forest hosts movie night at .  Watch “WALL-E", a robot that stumbles onto the key to Earth’s future. Rated G. Free Cracker Jacks popcorn to first 100 people. No charge.
  • 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday (April 22). “The Play Out” hosted by Lake Forest Open Lands Association at Mellody Farm Nature Preserve. Celebrate the importance of kids spending time in nature at “The Play Out”. Children and their families pledge to spend 150 minutes outside during Earth Day weekend. Join us for a complimentary day of outdoor activities including a natural obstacle course, shelter building, pond netting and tree climbing with The Care of Trees’ experts and much more. Snacks provided by Whole Foods–Deerfield along with a nature book sale by Lake Forest Bookstore. Appropriate for children, ages 3-13.
  • Saturday (April 23). “Hop the Shops” in historic Market Square. Free Easter prizes and specials at participating merchants.
  • 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday (April 26). Earth-friendly wildlife tours hosted by the .  The Wildlife Discovery Center is located in Elawa Farm on Waukegan Road.
  • 10 a.m. Friday (April 29). Lake Forest Arbor Day  Ceremony at Triangle Park hosted by Mayor James Cowhey and The City of Lake Forest.
  • 7 p.m. Friday (April 29). The City of Lake Forest hosts movie night at Gorton Community Center.  Watch “An Inconvenient Truth."  A documentary with Al Gore to make the issue of global warming a recognized problem worldwide.  Rated PG.  No charge.  Free Cracker Jacks popcorn to the first 100 people.
  • Friday, April 29. Astronomy night at Forest Beach, for residents with beach passes. Bring your own telescope. Sky maps will be available at the beach.
  • All week long. “Geocaching for Gardens “ is a high-tech treasure hunt game. Use your smartphone to find all 15 caches in unique gardens around the city. Scan the bar code to email the location of the cache. Use your GPS to find all the caches hidden throughout Lake Forest. The first 50 people that find all 15 caches win a free 100 percent cotton, organic, made in the USA Lake Forest Farmers Market tote bag. For complete instructions, visit www.lf150.com.
