Krasne then went on the offensive against Barkhausen, calling out the former Lake Bluff trustee to address a federal and state investigation dating back to 1993 to 1995 into a misuse of a district allowance to fund his personal business.

Barkhausen reacted strongly to Lesser’s press release and Krasne’s comments:

"It is pathetic to see Rick Lesser use Jay Krasne as his mouthpiece in his mud-slinging campaign," Barkhausen wrote in an email. "I’ve led Lake Bluff’s cost-cutting efforts and brought about a 30 percent property tax cut for Shields Township, among many accomplishments in office. Lesser offers no real record and no vision, just negative blather about a 20-year old investigation that turned up no evidence of wrongdoing. This is a new low for him."
