North Shore Towns to Tackle Underage Drinking

The City of Highwood is honored to partner with Parents. The Anti-Drug to increase awareness in the community about underage drinking. The community-based organization is dedicated to promoting a healthy and ongoing parent-child relationship, and distributing faithful information about the underage consumption of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs throughout District 113 communities; Bannockburn, Deerfield, Highwood, Fort Sheridan, and Highland Park.

Local liquor retailers, such as Jerry’s Liquors, Mr. Joseph’s Liquors, North Shore Wine & Spirits, and Walgreens, allowed the organization to tag bottles and post stickers with information on how easily purchased alcohol is accessed by teens.

Julie Hoffman, one of the founding members of the coalition, says, “We’re delighted to have Highwood participate in our activities and partner with us to further our mission in raising awareness about drug and alcohol use in our community. We’re working with Highwood to encourage parents to watch their children more closely, and reduce the possibility for kids to easily access liquor at home.”

Parents. The Anti-Drug began in April of 2009, and is comprised of dedicated parents, local government and school officials, clergy and healthcare providers who volunteer time to promote awareness regarding the risks and consequences pertaining to alcohol, tobacco, and drug usage.

The City of Highwood has aligned with Parents. The Anti-Drug to further the mission for bolstered awareness surrounding drug and alcohol use in the community. Highwood city officials, law enforcement, and volunteers remind parents purchasing alcohol to keep track of the alcohol in the home and make sure teens are not able to access alcohol easily.

Scott Hartman, City Manager of Highwood says, “The concern these parents demonstrate for all teens in our community is inspiring, impactful and appreciated. Their ongoing activism and awareness efforts are helping to instill social responsibility and promote healthier lifestyles.”

Charlie Pecaro, Mayor of Highwood explains, “The campaign encourages proactive communication to create a more knowledgeable adult and teen citizenry, while aiding the reduction of underage consumption in our community.”
