Should there be more affordable housing options in Lake Forest?

Not according to Patch readers.

In a poll Lake Forest Patch published last week, 19 readers said cheaper housing would diminish Lake Forest as an affluent community. Fifteen disagreed, voting "No, I shouldn't have to be a millionaire to live in Lake Forest."

The question was put forward in light of an April 18 community engagement forum at the Gorton Community Center, which gathered residents and real estate agents to discuss the types of housing in town.

"Lake Forest was designed with the more successful and affluent in mind," writes Mindy D. "For those who think they are 'entitled' to move in with them as opposed to working for it, get a life!"

Another reader suggested that affordable housing options like rentals allow older Lake Forest residents to stay connected to the community even after they have sold their homes.

"A very high percentage of older adults do not purchase after they sell their homes; they tend to rent, which makes some sense if they are contemplating other changes in their lives but wish to remain connected to the community where they have lived for a long period," writes Hmmmm6. "Rental does provide that flexibilty."
