What Do Lake Forest and Lake Bluff Residents Think of Obama's State of the Union Address?

Patch asks Lake Forest and Lake Bluff residents to weigh in on President Obama's State of the Union address.

President Barack Obama gave his fourth State of the Union address on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

"There is much progress to report," he began. "Together we have cleared away the rubble of crisis."

President Obama spoke of bi-partisan tax reform that includes lowering the tax rates on American businesses. He urged Congress to pass a budget that "replaces reckless cuts with smart savings."

He also spoke of job creation, proposing a "fix-it first" program to repair our nation's infrastructure, including 70,000 "structurally deficit bridges."

The President called for the minimum wage to be increased to $9 an hour because "no one who works full-time should have to live in poverty." He also encouraged Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act because women should "earn a living equal to their efforts."

Additionally, Obama said high quality childcare should be available to all children in America and that high schools should be redesigned with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math—skills that today's employers need from workers.

President Obama also addressed the improving housing market, climate change, immigration reform, cyber attacks, gun control, terrorism, bringing troops home, healthcare for wounded warriors, government benefits for gay couples and protection for our children, among other issues.

The White House official Website featured an enhanced broadcast, while the Huffington Post conducted a live blog.

Tell Us: What did you think of the President's address? Were you inspired or unmoved? What issues were most important to you? Were there issues you feel Obama should have addressed but didn't?

.....does Obama actually believe that living on $9 an hour is not living in poverty in Chicago.....?

Why yes Vicki, he does. He's wealthy & plans to make all his chronies wealthier while you & I (normal, everyday taxpayers) will pay more & more in taxes; not too mention the debacle of what's called Obamacare. So I watched the dog show instead.

"What Do Lake Forest and Lake Bluff Residents Think of Obama's State of the Union Address?" I think I'm sick of more government control and spending money we don't have so as to keep buying votes of the low information types. I think I'm also sick of the empty speeches and blame-shifting...

From a real Lake Forester & part of the 1%: I give Pres. Obama's speech an A-. He covered almost every issue that's important to bettering our country for ALL citizens.

It was just more of Obama's bogus State the Union Promises. Take a look at some of the promises Obama made back in 2009 during his first State of the Union Speech. He pledged to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term in office, instead Obama has average deficits of nearly three times that of George W. Bush. At the time Obama called Bush's debt irresponsible and unpatriotic. And what about Obama's pledge that his stimulus plan would save or create 3.5 million jobs? Now look at Obama's record. He may have promised 3.5 million new jobs, but he's 7.7 million jobs in the hole instead. Most of what Obama proposed last night was based on costly big government programs and money this nation does not have to spend. Once again Obama's policies will fail because government cannot create wealth or jobs. It is the free enterprise system. Unfortunately we have a President who believes otherwise. Sadly to many Americans lying is no big deal. Lying has become so entrenched in American political culture that many Americans will applaud Obama's speech not even realizing that many of the same promises were made before. For lying is fine if the lies also reflects your belief system. But if, let's say, you believe God created marriage as the union of a man and a woman, you're not only a hater but also a bigot.
Gary February 13, 2013 at 03:21 PM
Let me guess. The only reason his policies aren't working is because Republicans just don't believe it and refuse to clap their hands to help bring Obama's fantasies to life. Am I right?

Clearly, you didn't watch the same speech I did. To recap, this is what Pres. Obama said: Nothing I’m proposing tonight should increase our deficit by a single dime,' Obama said during his State of the Union address. 'It’s not a bigger government we need, but a smarter government that sets priorities and invests in broad-based growth.' SEQUESTER CUTS (that Mitch McConnell supports): 'These sudden, harsh, arbitrary cuts would jeopardize our military readiness. They'd devastate priorities like education, energy, and medical research. They would certainly slow our recovery, and cost us hundreds of thousands of jobs.' GUN CONTROL: 'I know this is not the first time this country has debated how to reduce gun violence. But this time is different. Overwhelming majorities of Americans - Americans who believe in the 2nd Amendment - have come together around commonsense reform - like background checks that will make it harder for criminals to get their hands on a gun ... Each of these proposals deserves a vote in Congress.' TAX REFORM: 'The American people deserve a tax code that helps small businesses spend less time filling out complicated forms, and more time expanding and hiring; a tax code that ensures billionaires with high-powered accountants can't pay a lower rate than their hard-working secretaries; a tax code that lowers incentives to move jobs overseas, and lowers tax rates for businesses and manufacturers that create jobs right here in America.'

Tell me, Mr. 1%, when does Obama start taking responsibility for the shrinking economy?
Pat Lyon February 13, 2013 at 04:32 PM
No. It's probably because many Republicans refuse to compromise. And don't give me that crap that Pres. Obama hasn't tried bi-partisanship. The truth is out there. You just don't want to believe it.
Gary February 13, 2013 at 04:47 PM
... and there it is. We have arrived at the point where 51% percent of the population can be convinced that the Republicans are responsible for the disastrous consequences of the Democrat's policies. Democrats will not consider the possibility that it is their own policies that are causing the problems, and the "legitimate" media will carry the water all day to further the Democrat's agenda. Our country will remain in a fiscal death spiral as long as this condition persists.

"From a real Lake Forester & part of the 1%: I give Pres. Obama's speech an A-" Pfffttttt! What's the word for a rich leftist? A hypocrite!
Carl Castrogiovanni February 13, 2013 at 05:13 PM
About the only way for someone to be part of the 1%, spew such hatred of fellow wealthy Republicans, and still so ardently promulgate such leftist ideology is for them to have inherited the wealth...

Carl Castrogiovanni February 13, 2013 at 06:46 PM
"Wrong." Sorry Chris; I read through your posting history. You are hard left. You are either an inheritor, hypocritical, or both.
Vicky Kujawa February 13, 2013 at 06:57 PM
I got stuck watching it during dinner; it happened to be on the telly at the restaurant. I would have much preferred Westminster! My pugs are smarter than Obama.

Anyone hear about the extra $500 a MONTH that smokers and obese people will be FORCED to shell out in premiums under Obamacare? "You have to pass it to see what's in it." - Pelosi.
Vicky Kujawa February 13, 2013 at 07:01 PM
......the guilt is palpable.
Jack Koenig February 13, 2013 at 07:50 PM
Anytime someone starts out with a premise similar to Miller's, you can bet they are full of bullsh#t. This is a typical ruse of the leftists and socialists (same): create the illusion you are part of (whatever you believe) and then spew the crapola!
Pat Lyon February 13, 2013 at 08:08 PM
For Mr. Castrogiovanni & Mr. Koenig - Thank you for insinuating that I'm a liar, a (hard) leftist, a socialist, a hater, and a hypocrite. You, sirs, are what keeps the Republican party so classy.
Sheila February 13, 2013 at 08:48 PM
Obama is still on the campaign trail and blaming every problem on the Republicans refusal to meet on the left. I also watched the Westminister Dog Show. Caught the lowlights of the State of the Union address this morning on Good Morning Obama's America.
Carl Castrogiovanni February 13, 2013 at 09:39 PM
No sale, Chris. There's nothing classless about calling BS on glaring non-sequiturs. There's nothing classless about calling someone's credibility into question on account of such claims.
Jack Koenig February 13, 2013 at 09:57 PM
Chris, considering the source, I wear your comments like a badge of honor for exposing such nonsense as garbage.
Gary February 13, 2013 at 10:59 PM
Romney was as classy as they come. Look what it got us.
