APT Freshmen Class Meeting Slates Feb. 17 Date

The APT Freshmen Class Meeting cancelled due the snowstorm Feb. 3 has been rescheduled for 1 p.m. Feb. 17 in the College and Career Resource Center, Room 103. Counselor Brad Naughton, Driver Education teacher Rhonda Benson, and Director of Student Services Merry Quinn will join the APT in sharing 2011-2012 registration information, driver education and upcoming events with freshmen parents.

There will be a Junior Parent Seminar: College Kick Off Part II at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Raymond Moore Auditorium at , 1285 N. McKinley Road. Dr. Merry Quinn, director of student services, and the LFHS counseling staff are teaming up to provide an information-packed session for the parents of juniors. The program will include small group breakout sessions with individual counselors where they will clarify their role in the college search/application process. Parents will learn what to expect from their child’s counselor and what counselors will need from parents and students to expedite and facilitate each child’s college plan. This program is to prepare juniors and their parents for the process of college selection/college plan. On Feb. 23,
there will be a Junior Parent Coffee: Recap of the College Kick Off Part II at
9 a.m. (Note: This is a late start day for students and classes will begin at 9:50 a.m.)
in the Wedge Café, located across the commons from the student cafeteria at LFHS East Campus, 1285 N. McKinley Road.

There will be a Sophomore Parent Meeting: "Moving On to Junior Year," at 10 a.m. Feb. 24 in the David Miller Theatre
 at LFHS East Campus, 1285 N. McKinley Road. The Counseling Department will review class selection for junior year, summer school options, the testing sequence, Naviance and provide a brief introduction into the college search process. Kathleen O’Hara will discuss the requirements for membership in National Honor Society, community service opportunities, Open Doors and summer opportunities. This will be the final sophomore parent meeting of the school year.

Each year the PSAT/NMSQT test, given to juniors, serves as an initial screen of more than 1 million entrants to the National Merit Program. In the annual National Merit Scholarship Program, 50,000 academically able high school students are honored. The Program was initiated in 1955, is a not-for-profit organization, and awards a sizable number of scholarship awards annually. The 2010 competition has 16,000 finalists this year with 8,400 Merit Scholarship awardees selected from this group as winners.
