Deer Path Wrestlers Win Sectional, Head to State

Deer Path Middle School's wrestling team captures the Antioch Sectional championship as nine Braves qualify for State Tournament Friday and Saturday in DeKalb.

Advancing nine wrestlers to the State Tournament, the Deer Path Middle School wrestling team won the Antioch Sectional championship Saturday with 148 points coming in ahead of Zion Central with 124.

Three Braves won individual championships while two more earned runner up medals and four reached the State Finals by taking finishing in third place, according to the Illinois Elementary School Association website.

Eighth grader Cory Barth won the 215-pound division while Caleb Durbin took the gold medal at 90 pounds defeating teammate Andrew Tuttle for the crown. Quinn Dailey was the 80 pound champion. Durbin and Dailey are in seventh grade while Tuttle is in eighth.

Another silver medal went to eighth grader Marko Tupanjac at 119. Finishing third were Chris Wasser (100), Liam Pooler (112), Peter Kennedy (126) and Alex Svigos (155). Pooler and Svigos are in eighth grade while Wasser and Kennedy are in seventh.

The State Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.
