Host of activities focus on making informed food choices.

The District 67 Association of Parents and Teachers (APT) Food Service Coordinators are sponsoring a number of activities in March to support National Nutrition Month.

National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. The theme for March 2012 is "Get Your Plate in Shape."

Everett School students were invited to share their ideas for eating healthier, or a creative way of following healthy eating at home by drawing a picture of their idea or writing down their suggestion and submitting them to their teacher. These ideas will be shared through the school's newsletter and on school bulletin boards. As a special incentive, students who submitted an idea will be treated to a special luncheon March 16 that includes games, and fruit trays.

Christi Baron, a registered dietician from Lake Forest Hospital, will speak to the Sheridan students about healthy nutritional choices on March 12. A contest will be held within each grade and the students from the winning classrooms will receive a free frozen treat. The children are going to be asked to rank four or five foods in order of health. One student from each winning classroom will be randomly drawn. Those selected students will each be allowed to design the hot lunch menu for a day, which will be used for the whole district with their name on their menu.
