Updated: Lake Forest Boys Enjoy 2-0 Weekend; Gymnasts Claim 3rd at Lake County Meet

Scouts’ Star Performer: Thomas Durrett sank a season-high 23 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Evan Boudreaux also finished in double figures with 11.

Other Notable Scout Performances: Luke Streppa added nine points and Ben Simpson scored seven.

What’s Next: Lake Forest (8-7 overall) visits Libertyville at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 17) and hosts Mundelein at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Jan. 20).

Scouts’ Star Performer: Thomas Durrett led with 21 points.

Other Notable Scout Performances: John Hayes hit a crucial layup late to give Lake Forest the lead for good. Ben Simpson sank a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer to keep the Scouts close.

The Bottom Line: The Scouts trailed until the final two minutes of the game, down 14-8 after the first quarter, 35-31 at halftime and 44-40 heading into the fourth quarter. Lake Forest (2-3 in NSC Lake) converted 3 of 4 free throws in the final minute to win their second straight in North Suburban Conference Lake play.

 

GIRLS' GYMNASTICS

Date: Jan. 14 - Lake County Meet

Final Score: 1. Carmel 151.05; 2. Stevenson 146.2; 3. ; 4. Barrington 140.325; 5. Libertyville 139.8; 6. Warren 138.7; 7. Mundelein 134.9; 8. Deerfield 133.55; 9. Vernon Hills 120.75.

Scouts’ Star Performer: Kylie Carlson put together one of her best meets of the season, finishing third in the all-around with a 37.85, which included a team-best third in floor exercise (9.6), fourth in vault (9.65), fifth on uneven parallel bars (9.4) and sixth on balance beam (9.2).

Other Notable Scout Performances: Katherine McKeon took fifth in the all-around with a 36.975. She nabbed fourth on the uneven bars (9.45), seventh in vault (9.525) and 11th in floor exercise (9.2). Brittany Moccia collected eighth in all-around (36.55) with a sixth in floor exercise (9.4), eighth on balance beam (9.1) and 10th in vault (9.455). Carly Schmidt added an 11th in vault (9.45).

What’s Next: Lake Forest visits Vernon Hills in a NSC dual at 6 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 18) and the Niles West Invitational at 1 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 21). 

The Bottom Line: Three of the top teams in the state battled it out once again. Factor in Prairie Ridge and those will likely be your top four teams at next month's State meet. Depth is what separated Lake Forest from its Lake County counterparts, but Carlson and McKeon will keep them close.

 

BOYS' SWIMMING

Date: Jan. 14 - New Trier Relays

Final Score: 1.New Trier 182; 2. Naperville North 124.50; 3. St. Charles North 110; 4. Stevenson 108.5; 5. Hinsdale Central 98; ; 7. Loyola 85; 8. Evanston 81; 9.  Barrington 75; 10. Libertyville 71; 11. Neuqua Valley 60; 12. Rockford Guilford 19.

Scouts’ Star Performer: The 200-yard medley relay of Scott Bunning, Peter Grumhaus, Bogdan Balteanu, and Colin Rowe took second in 1:38.78 behind New Trier. Bunning posted the highest individual finish with a second place in the 100 backstroke (53.34) and added a fifth in the 100 butterfly (53.13). Grumhaus had the next highest individual finish with a fifth place in the 500 freestyle (4:41.04).

Other Notable Scout Performances: Colin Rowe took sixth in the 100 freestyle (48.92); Grumhaus added a seventh in the 200 freestyle (1:45.34); Balteanu swam to eighth in the 100 breaststroke, and the 200 freestyle relay of Thomas Remmissong, David Hayes, Michael LeMay and Daniel Smith managed ninth (1:34.27).

What’s Next: Lake Forest is off until a dual meet with Stevenson at 5 p.m. Jan. 26.

The Bottom Line: Lake Forest continues to score well in these big meets thanks to its depth. Bunning is staking a claim for a top 8 finish at State in the 100 backstroke, while Grumhaus has a chance to do the same in both the 200 and 500 freestle events.

Scouts’ Star Performer: Annie Keller scored a team-high 11 points.

Other Notable Scout Performances: Gabby Perino added eight points and Norie Kaufmann added six.

What’s Next: Lake Forest (3-17 overall) hosts Zion-Benton at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 17) and visits Warren at 6 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 21).

The Bottom Line: The Scouts managed only single-digit totals in the first two quarters to fall behind 24-11 by halftime. A four-point third quarter didn't help matters.
