Lake Forest Boys', Girls' Cross Country Advance to Sectional; Volleyball Wins Tourney

Field Hockey moves closer to State tourney; Girls' Tennis finished tied for 8th at State.

Scouts’ Star Performer: Chris Charhut finished in the top 10, running a three-mile time of 16 minutes, 14.5 seconds for sixth place at Adler Park in Libertyville. Charhut was the Scouts' top finisher a week ago (eighth) at the North Suburban Conference meet to earn all-conference honors.

Other Notable Scout Performances: The rest of Lake Forest's top six included William Martin (23rd, 16:49.3), Eshwar Nandam (24th, 16:52.4), Sean Jones (28th, 16:55.9), Liam Gayter (34th, 17:04.3), Peter Grum (51st, 17:50.1), and Tim Dugan (58th, 18:14.8).

Who’s Next: The Scouts compete in Saturday's Schaumburg Sectional.

The Bottom Line: The Scouts will have a tough road trying to advance as a team to the State meet, but Charhut has been on a roll of late and could sneak in as an individual.

 

GIRLS' CROSS COUNTRY

Date: Oct. 22 - Libertyville Regional

The Final Score: 1. Mundelein 47; 2. Libertyville 51; 3. Warren 86; 4. Lake Forest 106; 5. Deerfield 134; 6. Stevenson 139; 7. Zion-Benton 169; 8. Waukegan 237; 9. Highland Park 247.

Scouts’ Star Performer: Erin Malles led the Scouts into the chute for a second straight week, completing the three-mile course in seventh place with a time of 19 minutes, 23.8 seconds at Adler Park in Libertyville. Her father, Larry, was the top local finisher in the recent Chicago Marathon.

Other Notable Scout Performances: The rest of Lake Forest's top six included Helen Schlachtenhaufen (16th, 19:56.2), Isabelle Block (24th, 20:16.9), Kendall Krieger (26th, 20:25.1), Ellie Revenaugh (33rd, 20:58.7), Lisa Bennatan (49th, 22:15.2), and Catherine Traut (52nd, 22:24.4).

Who’s Next: The Scouts compete in Saturday's Schaumburg Sectional.

The Bottom Line: Lake Forest faces a talented Sectional field, but Malles and Schlachtenhaufen could qualify as individuals.

 

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL

Date: Oct. 21-22

The Final Score: Pool Play: Lake Forest defeated Warren, 25-19, 25-9; defeated North Chicago, 25-5, 25-11 and Grant, 27-25, 25-14. Semifinals: Lake Forest defeated Zion-Benton, 24-26, 25-17, 25-20. Championship: Lake Forest defeated Stevenson, 20-25, 25-12, 25-23.

Scouts’ Star Performers: Mary Striedl posted 40 kills on 88 attempts, 8 aces, 21 digs and 7 blocks. Setter Heidi Sierks accumulated 115 assists, 10 kills, 5 aces and 13 digs.

Other Notable Scout Performances: Caroline Hopfinger registered 23 kills on 50 attempts; Hannah Gullberg had 23 kills on 52 attempts, 6 aces and 12 digs; Anna Schwartz managed 19 kills on 39 attempts, 7 blocks and 5 aces, and Maggie Jacobson made 45 digs and 6 aces.

Who’s Next: The Scouts face the winner of the Highland Park-Deerfield match at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 25) in the St. Viator Regional in Arlington Heights.

The Bottom Line: After winning the North Suburban Conference overall title earlier last week, the Scouts (29-4 overall, 7-1 in NSC Lake) used a variety of players to put down their NSC Lake Division foes. In both the semifinal and championship matches, Lake Forest  rebounded from a first game loss.

 

GIRLS' SWIMMING

Date: Oct. 20

The Final Score: Lake Forest 122, Mundelein 64. 

Scouts’ Star Performers: Caitlin Lanigan helped the 200-yard medley relay to a first place finish along with teammates Amanda Gottschalk, Rachel Stoehr and Katie Schott in 1:54.53, and then came back to win the 100 backstroke in 1:01.74 .

Other Notable Scout Performances: Stoehr was also a winner in the 50 freestyle, as was Gottschalk in the 200 individual medley (2:13.65). Jen Kordik added a first in the 200 freestyle (1:59.76); Christine Anderson in diving (193.15 points); Maggie Carney in the 100 butterfly (59.41); Eleanor Meeks in the 500 freestyle (5:16.71); Anne McArdle in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.61), and the 200 freestyle relay of Olivia Campbell, Lilly Wang, Carney and Meeks (1:43.11).

Who’s Next: The Scouts are host Vernon Hills at 5 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 28)

The Bottom Line: The Scouts gain a look at Vernon Hills before the North Suburban Conference meet on Nov. 5 at Vernon Hills. 

 

FIELD HOCKEY

Date: Oct. 20

The Final Score: Lake Forest 6, Deerfield 0. 

Scouts’ Star Performers: Abby Sirus and Kelsey Adams led the scoring with a pair of goals each.

Other Notable Scout Performance: Halle Frain and Natalie Asher added one goal apiece. Assists went to Morgan Dever (2), Brenna Carberry (2), Lauren Graves and Emily Cavalaris. Goalie Lina Trucco earned her 10th shutout of the season behind the defensive aid of Katie Skinner, Lauren Yarkony, Caroline Marwede, Amanda McMahon, Isabelle Montagne, Laura Beshilas and Kathleen McCoy.

Who’s Next: The Scouts face Glenbard West at 4 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 25) in the final home game on the Front Lawn. The winner moves on to the State tournament Oct. 28-29 at Illinois Benedictine University in Lisle.

The Bottom Line: The Scouts struck early against Deerfield, setting a good tone with a State tourney berth for the taking.

 

GIRLS' TENNIS

Date: Oct. 20-22

The Final Score: 1. Hinsdale Central 39; 2. New Trier 28; 3. Stevenson 21. 4 Deerfield 18; 5. Morgan Park Academy 16; 5 (tie). Homewood-Flossmoor 16; Wheaton (W. Warrenville South) 16; 8 (tie). Whitney Young 12; York 12; Lyons 12; Nazareth Academy 12; Lake Forest 12; Carmel 12; Glenbrook North 12.

Scouts’ Star Performers: Elizabeth Zordani advanced to the fourth round before losing to Morgan Park's Jerricka Boone, 6-4, 6-7 (9), 6-0. Boone went on to win the singles championship. Zordani knocked off Lyons' Katie Miller (6-0, 6-1); Chicago Christian's Lisa Chionis (6-2, 6-2), and Amanda Studnicki (6-3, 6-3).

Other Notable Scout Performance: Catherine Orfanos advanced to the third round before losing to Plainfield Central's Ali Foster, 6-4, 6-1. Orfanos defeated Normal Community's Abby Kosharek, 6-1, 6-2 and Deerfield's Mindy Borovsky, 3-6, 7-5 and 6-2. the doubles team of Megan and Colleen Morris topped Notre Dame's Kristin Tracy and Megan McGinn, 6-2, 6-1, but then lost to Rockford Auburn's Sarah Torrence and Jessie Walter, 6-2, 6-2. The doubles team of Taya Zoubareva and Vicky Falk fell in the first round to Whitney Young's Natalie Whalen and Kendall Scruggs, 6-3, 6-2. Whalen and Scruggs wound up finishing sixth.

Bottom line: The Scouts likely lost some valuable points when the inclement weather knocked out some of the backdraw matches, plus the unexpected first-round loss by Zoubareva and Falk, who were seeded fifth through eighth.
