Lake Forest Competes in High School Field of Science Olympiad

CLC hosts regional Science Olympiad for middle, high school students

 About 675 middle and high school science students will gather at the College of Lake County March 12 for the Grayslake Regional Science Olympiad competition. With contest titles such as “Disease Detectives,” “Dynamic Planet,” “Junkyard Challenge” and “Bottle Rocket,” the events allow students to do cool science experiments and participate in heated competitions.

The 2011 Science Olympiad runs from 8 a.m. to 2:50 p.m., with awards ceremonies at 4 p.m. The Olympiad will be held at locations throughout the Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St.

Some of the most popular and spectator friendly events involve robots, water rockets, catapults, bridges and towers. Visitors are invited to watch these competitions in the CLC Physical Education Center (Building 7). CLC faculty members will be involved in the competition as event supervisors, using their expertise in areas such as biology, chemistry lab,   physics and geography. 

The 13 participating high schools are Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Cary Grove, Conant, Crystal Lake Central, Crystal Lake South, Francis W. Parker, Grayslake Central, Grayslake North, Huntley, Lake Forest, Prairie Ridge and Stevenson.

The 16 participating middle schools are Antioch Upper Grade, Aptakisic, Bernotas, Daniel Wright, Francis W. Parker School, Frederick, Grayslake Middle School, Hannah Middle School South, Hawthorne Middle School South, Lundahl, North Shore Country Day School, Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, Round Lake Park, Sandburg Middle School Mundelein and St Gilbert.

CLC Student Government Association slates trustee candidates’ forum

The College of Lake County Student Government Association will sponsor a candidates’ forum at 6 p.m. March 24 in the Atrium of the Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St.

The program will feature the five candidates who are vying to fill two seats on the CLC Board of Trustees in the April 5 election. The format will be a brief presentation by the candidates, followed by a question and answer session. The candidates are (in ballot order) Rich Voltair, Round Lake Beach; Jeanne T. Goshgarian, Round Lake; Chelsea D. Schopper, Ingleside; Dr. Philip J. Carrigan, Waukegan; and Lynda C. Paul, Gurnee.

Professional skills training at CLC this spring

 Enhance your professional skills and boost your employability by enrolling in a continuing education course in your field. A wide variety of classes in many professional areas are offered by Continuing Professional Development at the College of Lake County this spring.

•  Improve your Computer Skills in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) by choosing an introductory, intermediate or advanced course. Courses are offered at a variety of times in March, April and May at the Grayslake and Southlake campuses. The cost is $199 per course. • New this spring, Computer Orientation 1: First Time PC Users, offered from 6-9 p.m., March 22 and 24. Computer use is necessary in almost any career you choose. If you are switching careers, you need computer skills. This hands-on course can help you become a confident, self-sufficient computer user. Cost: $99.

• Successful completion of the Flagger Certification and Work Zone Safety course, offered from 8 a.m. to noon March 26 for $125 at the Grayslake campus, will assist you in meeting state requirements.
• Community Service Officer is offered Monday-Friday, March 28 to April 1 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Grayslake campus. This five-day course will begin your training for this non-sworn position in a local police department. Additional requirements to become employed are set by individual law enforcement agencies. Cost: $325.

Prepare for a career in the security field with one of these courses:

• Security Officer Basic Training is offered Tuesday to Friday, April 12-15 from 6-10 p.m. and from 8 a.m. to noon April 16. Successful completion of this 20-hour program earns state certification, and you will be eligible for employment as an unarmed security guard. Cost: $189.
• Security Officer Firearm Training offered Tuesday to Friday, March 8-11 from 6-10 p.m. and from 8 a.m. to noon March or Tuesday to Friday, April 19-22 and from 8 a.m. to noon April 23. If you possess a current PERC card you may be ready to gain employment as an armed security guard. A current Illinois FOID card is mandatory to participate in this course. Cost: $249.
• ASP Tactical Handcuffing Certification, offered from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Upon successful completion, you will receive a certification from ASP in the use and deployment of tactical handcuffing. Cost: $89.
• Firearm Re-qualification, offered from 6-10 p.m. March and from 8 a.m. to noon March 12; or from 6-10 p.m. April 22 and 8 a.m. to noon April 23. Valid Illinois FOID and PERC cards are required. CLC Music Department presents two spring choral concerts

Two choral concerts will be presented by the College of Lake County Music Department this spring at 4 p.m. March 20 and April 17.

The CLC Gospel Choir Concert will be held at 4 p.m. March 20. Seven choir members will be featured as soloists: Carlos Boglin, Brendan Cox, Kimberly Cyphers, Sidonia Davis, Carrington Thomas, Becky Tokarz and Tina Miritello. The concert program will include the songs “I Will Celebrate,” “Forever You’re My King,” “Holy Holy Holy,” “The Solid Rock,” “I Command My Soul,” “When I Think About the Lord,” “Can’t Hold Back Your Praises” (composed by CLC student and Gospel Choir member Kedric Mabon), “Close To You,” “Hallelujah, You’re Worthy to Be Praised,” “Sweet By and By” and “High Praise.”

The Spring Choral Concert will be presented at 4 p.m. April 17. The final concert of the 2010-2011 academic year will feature the CLC Singers, the Choir of Lake County, the Gospel Choir and the CLC Chamber Singers, presenting an exciting array of choral works that span 16th century Renaissance to present day modern choral styles. Music will be heard by composers such as Farmer, Scarlatti, Vivaldi, Haydn, Brahms and Eric Whitacre. Also on the program are “In This Land” by Lake County composer Wayland Rogers and “Every Time I Think About Jesus,” arranged by the late L.L. Fleming, formerly ofAugsburg College.

The Chamber Singers and the CLC Singers will combine to sing “Glorious Everlasting” by Thomas Cousins, the Gospel Choir and the CLC Singers will combine to perform “Rock-a Mah Soul” by Charles H. Gilchrist and 120 singers from the four ensembles will close the concert with Fleming’s “Every Time I Think About Jesus” and “I Hear America Singing” by André Thomas. CLC choirs are directed by Dr. Charles Clency and accompanied by Wyeth Duncan.
