Lake Forest Duo Keep Company With Lacrosse Elite

Help Midwest team score first win at national tourney.

If the measure of athletes can be judged partly by the company they keep, then ’s and are rubbing shoulders with the right group.

The Lake Forest duo participated earlier this month as part of a Midwest team in the Under Armour All-America Classic Lacrosse Tournament, held July 4 weekend on the campus of Towson University in Towson, Md.

The Midwest team was formed from a pool of players from Illinois, Ohio, Minnesota and Kansas, who had tried out in early June. The Illinois contingent included players from Loyola Academy, New Trier, Lake Forest, Stevenson, Montini Catholic, Hinsdale Central, Lyons Township and Glenbrook South.

The Midwest team was placed in a bracket with Eastern powers Long Island, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and the Western States.

The Midwest coaches were Loyola Academy coach John Dwyer; Elizabeth Pinney, who played at Virginia and also coaches at Loyola Academy, and recent Georgetown grad and All-American attacker Jordy Kirr. Both Pinney and Kirr are Baltimore natives, and both graduated from Bryn Mawr School.

Dwyer noted the level of talent made the Midwest team’s first-ever win in the three years it has been participating in the Classic a major breakthrough.

“Our team was very competitive in every game against an extremely talented pool of teams from the elite hotbeds of lacrosse in the country,” Dwyer said.

Dwyer, who has coached against Lake Forest as head coach at Loyola, appreciated having the two Scout players on the Midwest team.

“Isabelle is one of the very best players in our state,” Dwyer said. “She played predominantly defense for us in this event, and played it with a dogged determination, shutting down some of the highest-rated attackers in the country from Long Island and D.C. Her effort was really impressive, and she seemed to never tire in the heat of the Baltimore summer.”

Carberry was an important part of the Midwest attack, Dwyer said.

“Brenna is an attacker with a knack for getting open,” he said. “She sees the field well and can feed in tight spots against the aggressive defenders of the East Coast teams. She had some big goals and assists for our team.”

Overall, Dwyer said the experience will be invaluable to all the players.

“We want them to come away with knowing they competed against some of the best undergraduate lacrosse players in the country, were able to register a win and proved they can more than compete at the highest level,” he said.
