Lake Forest Field Hockey, Boys' Golf Teams Earn Impressive Wins

Tennis and girls' golf teams show metal as well.

FIELD HOCKEY

Date: Sept. 17 

The Final Score: Lake Forest 1, Sacred Heart (Kentucky) 1 (Lake Forest wins tiebreaker, 3-2); Lake Forest 1, Assumption (Kentucky) 0; Lake Forest 2, Pioneer (Michigan) 1; Lake Forest 4, Mercy (Kentucky) 1; Lake Forest 2, MICDS (St. Louis) 0.

Scouts’ Star Performer: Lina Trucco made 32 saves for the five-game tournament as Morgan Dever, Jessica Staton and Kelsey Adams provided the overtime penalty goals in the championship game to give Lake Forest the tourney crown over Sacred Heart of Kentucky. Staton notched a score and two assists over the event while Dever added a pair of assists.

Other Notable Scout Performances: Halle Frain tallied three goals and Margot Mayer added two assists. Katie Skinner stopped three balls from going in the goal from her defensive position.

Who’s Next:   The Scouts entertain Highland Park at 4:30 p.m. today (Sept. 19) on the Front Lawn and travel to Stevenson at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 20). 

The Bottom Line:  The Scouts became the first team from Illinois to win the Oak Park River Forest Invitational in the tournament’s eight-year history. They did it with five solid victories including an overtime win on penalty shots for the championship. 

 

BOYS' GOLF

Date: Sept. 17 - Wheeling Invitational

The Final Score: Lake Forest 301, 2. Barrington 311, 3. Prospect 315, 4. St. Viator 317, 5. St. Charles North 322, 6. Loyola 324 (25 teams competed).

Scouts’ Star Performers: Ian Mankoff took fourth place overall with a 74 while Matt Garrity’s 75 was good for fifth.

Other Notable Scout Performances: Nick Steffens carded a 76 while Joe Willis added a 78. 

 

Date: Sept. 17 - Mundelein Invitational

The Final Score: 1. Mundelein 309, 2. Lake Forest 312, 3. Vernon Hills 315, 4. Huntley 326, 5. Lakes 333, 6. Grayslake Central 335, 7. Wheaton St. Francis 365, 7. Schaumburg 398.

Scouts’ Star Performer: Jack Hermes fired a 76 to pace Lake Forest.

Other Notable Scout Performances: Corbon Heizer added a 77, Henry Briggs a 78 and Alex Applebaum an 81. 

Who’s Next:  The Scouts entertain Libertyville at 4 p.m. today (Sept. 19) at the Knollwood Club. 

The Bottom Line: Once again the Scouts split their team into two squads to tackle the competition at a pair of invitationals and came away with a championship and second place trophy.

 

Date: Sept. 15

The Final Score: Lake Forest 144, Stevenson 157 

Scouts’ Star Performer: Drew Takacs fired a one-under par 35 to lead the Scouts.

Other Notable Scout Performances: Joe Willis and Ian Mankoff carded even par 36’s while Henry Briggs added a 37. 

Who’s Next:   The Scouts averaged even par for the meet to bury the Patriots and remain undefeated in dual meet play in this North Suburban Conference match-up. 

The Bottom Line: Remaining undefeated in dual meet competition, Lake Forest posted a team score below par for the first time this season. An even par outing would have been 144, and Lake Forest carded an aggregate 142.

 

GIRLS' TENNIS

Date: Sept. 17

The Final Score: Lake Forest 4, York 1; Lake Forest 4, Homewood-Flossmor 1; Lake Forest 3, Whitney Young 2.

Scouts’ Star Performers: It was a team victory all the way around as Megan Morris, Catherine Orfanos, Colleen Morris, Natalie Pollard, Lucy Lincoln, Paige Douglass, Haley Killam, Margaux Miller, Natalie Pollard and Emily Kuchman each provided a pair of victories in either singles or doubles.

Who’s Next: The Scouts will entertain Warren at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 20). 

The Bottom Line: Lake Forest stopped three teams to take the title in the York Invitational. 

 

Date: Sept. 16 

The Final Score: Lake Forest 4, Moline 1 

Scouts’ Star Performers: Victories came from Victoria Falk at No. 1 singles as well as the doubles teams of Megan Morris and Elizabeth Zordani, Catherine Orfanos and Margaux Miller along with Haley Killam and Emily Kuchman.

The Bottom Line:  The Scouts took this meet against downstate Moline with another balanced team effort. 

 

Date: Sept. 15 

The Final Score:  Lake Forest 7, Zion-Benton 0 

Scouts’ Star Performer: Victoria Falk, Paige Douglass and Emily Kuchman captured singles victories for Lake Forest.

Other Notable Scout Performances: The doubles teams of Margaux Miller and Catherine Orfanos, Haley Killam and Colleen Morris, Natalie Pollard and Lucy Lincoln along with Annie Wells and Emma Eichelman also added wins. 

The Bottom Line: Coach Denise Murphy went deep into her lineup to earn another North Suburban Conference win. 

 

GIRLS' GOLF 

Date: Sept. 14

The Final Score:  Libertyville 165, Lake Forest 177 

Scouts’ Star Performer: Corrine Donohue fired a 47 to record Lake Forest’s top score.

The Bottom Line: Despite a solid effort the Scouts were unable to overcome a strong Wildcat effort. 

 

Date: Sept. 13 

The Final Score: New Trier 155, Lake Forest 200 

Scouts’ Star Performer: Paige Skinner carded a 41 to lead Lake Forest.

Who’s Next: The Scouts will entertain Warren at 4 p.m. today (Sept. 19). 

The Bottom Line: The always tough Trevians were too much for the Scouts.

 

BOYS SOCCER

Date: Sept. 17

The Final Score: Lake Forest 3, Evanston 1

Scouts’ Star Performers: Kevin Grube scored one goal and assisted on another. Devin Gregory had four saves in goal during part-time duty.

Other Notable Scout Performances: Michael Shipp and Peter Passolino each scored a goal. Sam Audley shared the goal tending responsibilities with Gregory logging a pair of saves.

Who’s Next: The Scouts entertain Warren at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 20).

The Bottom Line: Lake Forest took a quick lead in the first two minutes before Evanston evened the score early in the first half, 1-1. The Scouts grabbed the lead later in the period and added their insurance goal in the last two minutes. Lake Forest is now 7-2-0 overall.

 

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL

Date: Sept. 16-17 - Maine East Invitational

The Final Score: Lake Forest defeated Oak Forest 25-18, 25-16; Maine South defeated Lake Forest 25-17, 8-26, 25-22; Lake Forest defeated Addison Trail 25-9, 19-25, 25-18; Lake Forest defeated Oak Forest 25-14, 25-16; Lake Forest defeated Regina Dominican 25-17, 25-1. 

Scouts’ Star Performers: Heidi Sierks logged 83 assists, 10 kills, five aces and 18 digs while Mary Striedl had 50 kills, 11 aces and 33 digs.

Other Notable Scout Performances: Tori Lanzillotti notched 34 kills for Lake Forest along with 14 aces and 33 digs. Mary Gwen Baker earned 44 assists along with three aces and three digs.

Who’s Next: The Scouts entertain Warren at 6 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 21).

The Bottom Line: Winning four matches and dropping one at the Maine East Invitational over the weekend, the Scouts finished third.

 

GIRLS' SWIMMING

Date: Sept. 15

The Final Score: Lake Forest 138, Warren 48 

Scouts’ Star Performer: Mika Hlavin won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 backstroke as well as being part of the winning 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay.

Other Notable Scout Performances: Eleanor Meeks took the 200 individual medley and was part of all three winning relay teams. Lilly Wang captured the 100 freestyle and helped propel the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams to victory.

Who’s Next: The Scouts travel to Libertyville at 5 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 22).

The Bottom Line: Depth helped Lake Forest dominate Warren as the Scouts won all but one event.
