Lake Forest High School Graduates Class of 2013

Lake Forest High School graduated its class of 2013 on the front lawn today as 438 seniors cheered and were cheered while they received their diplomas.

After the students walked from the high school’s front doors and around half the crowd to their seats in front of the stage, they were welcomed by acting Principal Jim Thiel and Lake Forest Community High School District 115 Superintendent Mike Simeck.

Simeck took a moment to characterize the class both academically and beyond. “They will be going to a combined 162 colleges in 41 states, the District of Columbia and three (foreign) countries,” he said. “They hold doors, say ‘please’ and mean it.”

Senior Class President Isabelle Montagne gave the commencement address telling her classmates and more than 1,000 in the crowd of family and friends their four years were more than what they learned in class. “We are beginning to see who we are,” she said.

Social studies teacher Joe DeRosa was named educator of the year but was not a popularity contest. Thiel explained each senior writes an essay nominating a teacher. Quinn Martin wrote the winning essay giving DeRosa the nod.

“He only cared that you were in his class learning,” Martin said reading his essay. “I had him my freshman year and it was my hardest class (but) I enjoyed going to my hardest class.”

Student Council President Hannah Faucher spoke as well before Thiel read the names of the graduates and they received their diplomas from members of the District 115 Board of Education.
