Lake Forest High School has Nine National Merit Semifinalists

College Kick-off Meeting for junior parents is Thursday.

There will be a Junior parent meeting, “College Kick Off Part 1,” from 7-9 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 29) in the Raymond Moore Auditorium at LFHS East Campus, 1285 N. McKinley Road.  There will be breakout sessions with LFHS counselors after the presentation. A re-cap of this meeting will be held on Oct. 3 from 9 -10:00 a.m. in room 113 at LFHS East Campus.

LFHS yearbook photos 2011-2012 for freshmen, sophomore and junior students will take place Oct. 4-6 during the student lunch hours. Photos will be taken in the library at Lake Forest High School East Campus. Order forms can be found on www.lfhs.org

More than 1.4 million juniors in nearly 21,000 high schools entered the 2012 National Merit Program by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists were announced recently. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will be selected as Merit Scholarship winners. Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Competition for 2012 from Lake Forest High School were:  William Arnson, Julia Frost, Hannah Gersten, Katherine Rowe, Rebecca Scribner, Katherine Sentell, Samuel Tauke, Matthew Wagener, and Amanda Zhou.

The Lake Forest High School Association of Parents and Teachers (APT) will host the annual "Be True to Your School" Autumn Social Event and Fundraiser on Oct. 22. LFHS parents are encouraged to attend. The reservation deadline is Oct. 7. Information and invitation RSVP forms can be found at www.lfhs.org. Any questions can be directed to APT parent volunteers, Erin Foley (foley.e@comcast.net) or Kathleen Hanson (rkewk@aol.com). The evening, which includes dinner and dance music, will take place in the tent at the . Following a long tradition of past events, the evening will continue to raise funds for the student led class treasuries through a raffle and live auction. However, in addition, this year's celebration will also offer an opportunity to raise funds to allow the entire LFHS campus to move to a completely wireless environment. PSAT/PLAN testing for sophomores and juniors will take place Oct. 12, and is a regular day of attendance for freshmen, sophomores and juniors. Seniors are excused from morning activities and will be expected to report to school at 11:30 a.m. Early Bird physical education classes will not meet on this day. Early Bird science classes will meet first period only.
 During the morning; all sophomores and juniors will be taking the PLAN and PSAT/NMSQT tests, respectively. Freshmen will participate in a Freshmen Orientation II morning of activities. Buses will run their normal schedules. All morning activities will begin promptly at 7:50 a.m.

 The PLAN exam is a practice ACT test that provides achievement scores and assessments of study skills and career information. Room assignments for this testing will be posted in the main front hallway prior to and on the test day. Sophomore students are expected to take this exam at 7:50 a.m.

 The Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship qualifying test will be administered to juniors at 7:50 a.m. Room assignments for this testing will be posted in the main front hallway prior to and on the testing day. Juniors take this exam as a practice for the SAT test and it is used as criteria for selecting National Merit Semifinalists. The Student Services Department will offer freshmen a variety of activities and educational sessions during the morning’s testing.

The junior/senior Play "Almost, Maine" will be performed Oc.13-15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Raymond Moore Auditorium, LFHS East Campus, 1285 N. McKinley. Tickets will be available on-line and linked from www.lfhs.org.  “Almost, Maine” by Johan Cariani, is directed by Joe Pulio. Features a cast of 18 including Alex Levin, Lia Donovan, Sammy Dolgin, Liza Passalino, Andrew Piechota, Sara Ransom, Ellie Doyle, Mollie Blahunka, Connor Kenehan, Ingrid Lustig, Steven Schur, Alex Whittington-Baschoff, Colin Seikel, Mac Myles, Emily Neuberger, Jenny Poth, Erica Renee Werner and Ross Kugman. The student director is Mari Uchida. Technical direction for the show is by Jenny Alaimo, Rachel Penn, Brett Pepowski and Greg Reinert; scenic design by Jenny Alaimo and Rachel Penn; lighting design by Brett Pepowski, sound design by Jonathan Flusser, and props by Allegra Levin and Kirsten Vold.

Recently, a group of current and former LFHS Telecom students were acknowledged at the Chicago 48 hour film festival in Chicago. The entry, called “Midwest,” was awarded “Best Film runner-up” and “Best Cinematography.” The group placed in the top three in five other categories (direction, acting, writing, costume and special effects). The following contributors to this project included: senior students Justine Burchall, Luke Landsell and former LFHS students, Jacob Hellinga, Frank Henderson, Hayden McAfee, Spencer Higbee, Geoff Neal, Max Moore, Kevin Davidson, Woody Tauke, Lain Kienzle, and Jackson Moore.
