"College 101" Open to Community to Learn Process

Lake Forest College professor helps parents with Facebook.

 

LFHS will host a parent seminar, “College 101”, open to all community members from 8:30-11:30 a.m. March 10 at Lake Forest High School's East Campus, 1285 N. McKinley Road. The Student Services Counseling Department will lead this opportunity for parents and students to learn more about the various aspects of the college and career process. There will be multiple 30-minute sessions for various aspects of applying to college. Participants may choose which sessions to attend including: College Process, Academic and Career Planning, Financial Aid, NCAA Student Athletes, and Writing Admission Essays. Participants may attend one or more of the timely sessions offered. LFHS Faculty members will be presenting along with Genevra Gallo-Bayiates from the Career Advancement Center at Lake Forest College and Maggie Bleeker of the Financial Aid office of Northwestern University. Lake Forest High School's Junior Class will host a senior citizens' party: "1940's Black & White Masquerade," from 2-4 p.m. March 11 at Dickinson Hall Senior Center, 100 East Old Mill Road, in Lake Forest. All Lake Forest and Lake Bluff seniors are invited to attend and enjoy this lovely party. Guests should make a reservation by calling Dickinson Hall at (847) 234-2209. The Lake Forest High School Jazz Band will provide entertainment.  Refreshments will be served. Student volunteer information and invitations can be found at www.lfhs.org.

“Lunch & Learn: Conversations for Careers” Open Doors Program Sessions will be held March 12 and 14. On March 12, Elliot Pinsel, an attorney with Daniels, Long and Pinsel will present. On March 14, "The Future of Nursing in the Changing Healthcare System," will be presented by Hadassah Nursing Task Force. These sessions are open to freshmen through seniors. Students must sign up in advance to attend as lunch will be provided and there is a maximum of 20 per session. There will be a regular meeting of the Board of Education of Lake Forest Community High School District 115 at 7 p.m. March 13 at the West Campus, 300 S. Waukegan Road.

Stedman Graham is chairman and CEO of S. Graham & Associates, a management, marketing, and consulting firm based in Chicago. He will be presenting "Identity - Your Passport to Success - Know yourself, be yourself, stay yourself: Find your true identity to gain focus and motivation, develop a vision, and find life's purpose," at Lake Forest High School at 7 p.m. March 14. Seating is reserved and limited. Admission is $5 per person. Tickets can be purchased on-line at www.lfhs.org. Graham speaks, conducts seminars, and develops programs for businesses and educational organizations worldwide.

“Facebook for Parents” will be presented from 7-8:30 p.m. March 15 at Lake Forest High School's East Campus, in the David Miller Theatre, 1285 N. McKinley Road. Devorah Heitner, Media Studies professor at Lake Forest College, will present information to LFHS parents regarding their teens’ use of Facebook and social media. Are kids trading in real-life social skills for online activity? What are kids really doing on Facebook? How can parents relate to their kids using social media?  Join us for an information session and discussion as Professor Heitner examines the proliferation of Facebook, Twitter, and texting in our families’ lives and how parents can manage and understand the consequences of social media. Sponsored by the LFHS APT and LEAD.

LFHS third quarter ends March 16 and third quarter grades should be available in Power School approximately March 20. Report cards will not be mailed home. Grades may be accessed via Power School. Second semester grades will still be mailed to homes.

The application deadline for a wide-range of scholarships available to LFHS students is March 16. Students wishing to pursue scholarship opportunities can view a list of all current scholarship offerings on Naviance, which contains the most current list, or in the publication “Scholarship Scoop” which is updated frequently. This information, along with some scholarship applications is available in the College and Career Resource Center or can be found at www.lfhs.org. The Local Scholarship applications, which are for LFHS seniors only, are now available in the College and Career Resource Center. Applications must be returned to Mrs. Gleason in the CCRC by 3:30 p.m. March 16.

Applications are now available for the Senior Contribution Scholarship awarded by the APT. This scholarship honors those seniors who have made significant contributions to the Lake Forest High School community during their student years. For an application and detailed information about the scholarship, more information can be found at www.lfhs.org, or stop in the College Resource Center. LFHS seniors are encouraged to complete application forms for the Applause Scholarships For Excellence in Music, which are available in the College Career Resource Center, LFHS East Campus. Applications must be submitted by 3:30 p.m. March 16. No late forms will be accepted.

The deadline to submit volunteer hours for President's Volunteer Award is March 16. The President's Volunteer Service Award on April 17 is the annual Student Service Recognition Night ceremony. The President's Volunteer Service Award is a nationally recognized service award sponsored through the White House and the Points of Light Foundation. This award is based solely on the number of service hours completed by a student within a year's time. The LFHS year runs from March 16, 2011 through March 15, 2012. There are three levels of recognition: Bronze for 100 hours; Silver for 175 hours; and Gold for 250 hours or more.  Only students who have recorded their hours with the Student and Community Service Office will be eligible to receive one of these awards.   Students should record their volunteer hours by March 16, 2012 on the online volunteer service hours recording sheet, which can be found at www.lfhs.org.  For questions about eligibility for the President's Volunteer Service Award, contact Kathy O'Hara at kohara@lfschools.net or (847) 582-7444.
