Lake Forest, Lake Bluff Students Earn Illinois State Scholar Status

Choirs gain honors at national competition.

Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart’s prestigious performing choirs, Kaleidoscope and Microscope, recently received top honors at the Heritage Festival national competition held in Washington D.C. Under the direction of Elizabeth Kurowski, the 25-member Kaleidoscope received a Gold/Superior rating in the Treble Choir division, and were honored with an Invitation to the Festival of Gold for the 2011-2012 school year for their performance of "How Will I Go Without Ye?" by Andrea Klouse, "Dance On My Heart" by Allen Koepke and "Homeland by Z," by Randall Stroope. Junior Caroline Kagan was awarded one of three “Music Maestro” awards given for her outstanding solo included in the selection by Andrea Klouse. Microscope, under the direction of senior Kaitlin Donnelly, received a Gold/Superior rating in the Chamber Choir/Madrigal Choir division, and were also honored with an Invitation to the Festival of Gold for the 2011-2012 school year.

Woodlands offers summer volleyball, basketball and field hockey camps for girls in grades 7-12. The volleyball and field hockey camp will run June 20-24, while the basketball camp runs June 21-24. The camps welcome all skill levels, and include a mix of skill instruction, game play, speed and agility, and offensiveand defensive system dissection. Space is limited, and girls are encouraged to register early. The registration deadline is June 1. The fee for volleyball and field hockey camp is $125 per person, while basketball camp is $100 per person. The following seniors have been elected into Pi Sigma Pi, theIllinois Academic Honor Society in history. These students have achieved high levels of academic success during their four years of study of history and have a minimum of a B+ average in honors level history classes. The honorees are: Charlotte Elwart, Maryl Montagne, and Riley Parrott of Lake Forest, Allyson Genger and Anne Goodman of LakeBluff, and Hannah Wilson of Winnetka.

Students inducted into the Societé Honoraire Française (SHF) were junior Lulu Ren of the People’s Republic of China; sophomores Catherine Dorman of Chicago and Flora Harris of Lake Forest; and freshmen Megan Oelerich of Chicago, Andrea Tellez of Waukegan, and Caroline Watts of Lake Bluff. For membership in the SHF, students must been enrolled in second year French or higher, have an A- or better as their cumulative average in French, and have at least a B- cumulative average in all of their high school subjects.

The following students were inducted into the National Spanish Honor Society (NSHS):  seniors Alexis Good of Westville, Kelsey Key and Leann Lyden of Lake Forest, and Sara Reyes of Kenilworth; juniors Karly Anderson of Grayslake, Gabriela Carrillo of Palatine, Alexandra Lazar of Lake Forest, Meaghan Long of OrlandPark, Grace Rudnik of Lake Bluff, and Isabella Swift of Mettawa; and sophomores Emily Bartusiak of Deerfield and Caitlin L. McCarthy of Winnetka. To be eligible for membership in the NSHS, students must maintain a 90 percent average in their Spanish courses, and must commit to continuing their Spanish studies and to performing three hours of community service.

The Illinois State Scholars for the Class of 2011 include seniors Kaitlin Donnelly and Hannah Wilson of Winnetka; Charlotte Elwart, Maryl Montagne, Christina Osorio and Riley Parrott of Lake Forest, and Allyson Genger and Anne Goodman of Lake Bluff. Students ranking in the top 10 percent of the state’s graduating seniors are recognized as Illinois State Scholars. These rankings are based on a combination of ACT test scores and class rank at the end of the sixth semester in high school.
