LFHS to Host Depression Awareness Week Events

SADD "Depression Awareness Week" events will take place beginning Monday, May 6 at Lake Forest High School.

Class of 2014 senior yearbook portrait appointment sign-up dates are Wednesday, May 1 and Thursday, May 2 in the LFHS student cafeteria. Visual Image Photography (VIP) is the official photographer of Lake Forest High School. In order to appear in the yearbook, all seniors must have their photo taken by VIP. Photographs submitted from other studios will not be accepted into the yearbook. Sign-ups will be held in the Cafeteria from 10:30 am -1:30 pm. For those who are not able to sign-up on these dates at the school, appointments can be made by calling 847-499-9300 or 800-577-9570.

The LFHS spring musical "Seussical" will be performed on Thursday, May 2 - Saturday, May 4 at 7:00 pm in the Raymond Moore Auditorium at LFHS East Campus, 1285 N. McKinley Rd. Lake Forest, IL.  Based on the works of Dr. Seuss, book by Stephen Flaherty & Lynn Ahrens with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens.  This is a show for all ages! Tickets can be purchased on-line at www.lfhs.org.

Senior students (class of 2013) are encouraged to nominate a teacher for the Distinguished Educator Award. The nomination deadline is Friday, May 3. Students may nominate a teacher, counselor, dean, or an administrator for this award.  The student at graduation to announce the Distinguished Educator recipient will read the winning nomination essay. Lake Forest High School Class of 2013 annual “Bike & Bake Sale” fundraiser will be held on Saturday, May 4 at LFHS East Campus Field House, 1285 N. McKinley Road, Lake Forest, IL. The sale begins at 10:00 am and continues until supplies last - so be there early! There will be great deals on bikes and more for all ages.  To donate, please drop off gently used bikes, roller blades, baby joggers, wagons, and scooters on Friday, May 3 from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm, or Saturday, May 4 from 7:00 am - 9:30 am. Drop off will be behind the school at the north end.   Donors may choose to donate half or the entire sale price of the donated item. SADD “Depression Awareness Week” events will take place beginning Monday, May 6.  On May 6, Dr. Mark Reinecke, PhD, Northwestern University and teen depression expert, will speak to LFHS students in the David Miller Theatre during all lunches, 10:40 am – 1:20 pm, about ways to “Keep Calm and Carry On – Managing stress, anxiety, tension, worry, pressure, parents and school.” On Tuesday, May 7, Erasing the Distance Troupe, a theater troupe of professional actors who visit high schools throughout Chicagoland, taking real stories from teens suffering mental illness and sculpting their actual words into moving and educational monologues and scenes, will be in the David Miller Theatre during all lunches, 10:40 am – 1:20 pm. This specific performance will highlight the words and true stories of three very different teens facing depression, followed by an interactive dialogue with the audience. On Wednesday, May 8 there will be a  “staff only” event the David Miller Theatre during all lunches, 10:40 am – 1:20 pm., with Dr. Karen Swartz, MD, Johns Hopkins University Director, ADAP (Adolescent Depression Awareness Program). Dr. Swartz leads the groundbreaking ADAP team from Johns Hopkins, Baltimore, MD and will speak to the school staff about adolescent depression and suicide. Dr. Swartz brings a message of hope that depression is a common, medical illness – and treatable! Her emphasis is on depression literacy and education and she will inform the staff about depression signs and symptoms, as well as treatment and the latest research.  On Thursday, May 9 LFHS Lighthouse Panel will be presenting stories from real teens about depression, including first-hand stories, discussion and video in the David Miller Theatre during all lunches, 10:40 am – 1:20 pm. Ericka’s Lighthouse is an organization founded in response to the suicide of a North Shore student named Ericka.  On Friday, May 10 Namaste Day will bring local yoga instructors to lead students and staff through quiet Yoga Nidra, teaching the fundamental concepts and basics of this peaceful practice to decrease stress and anxiety in the Dance Room during all lunches, 10:40 am – 1:20 pm.  Also Friday, “Enjoy The Journey” to College Q&A will be held for Sophomores and Juniors in the David Miller Theatre during all lunches, 10:40 am – 1:20 pm. LFHS “Enjoy The Journey” is hosting this informative event, where students will hear from LFHS guidance counselors and senior students who are headed off to college. There will be tips and tricks for managing the college investigation and application process in the most thoughtful, efficient, and stress-free way possible.

Lake Forest High School Shanghai Exchange Program 2013-2014 application deadline is Wednesday, May 8.  Application forms can be found atwww.lfhs.org.
The Lake Forest-Shanghai student exchange will be offered during the 2013-2014 school year. Current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who have an interest in Chinese culture and travel to China are encouraged to apply.

In the spirit of the Forbes list, a special recital, “25 Under 25 Recital” will feature the best and brightest classical talent from Lake County on Sunday, May 5. Musicians from the Music Institute of Chicago, Midwest Young Artists, Lake Forest High School, and Lake Forest College will perform at Lake Forest High School's Raymond Moore Auditorium on Sunday, May 5, 2013 at 2:30pm.   Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students and senior citizens.
