Lake Forest Drops Opener At Buffalo Grove; Spagnoli Says Blame Him, Not Players

Scouts put up plenty of points, but defense can't get key stops in second half.

Lake Forest loses it's opening game of the season to Buffalo Grove, 31-24, Friday night at BG.

Here is a quick wrap up from Buffalo Grove (video).

This is a Q & A with emotional Scouts coach Chuck Spagnoli, who blamed himself for the loss repeatedly after the game:

It looks like it could have gone either way. You were right there with them.

Anybody who thinks we deserve to win that game is crazy. We didn't have any reason to win that game. I feel bad for our kids as I did a bad job getting them ready for this game. I don't know how many penalties we had, 20?

The 15-yarders (five for the game) hurt you.

Killed us, killed us.

Baylor Broughton kicks a 33 yard field goal and you guys take the lead 17-16 with 5:42 left in the third. Then they come back and score to make it 24-16, converting a few third downs on that drive.

We give them a first down on a penalty, then down on the goal line we give it up. That's on me. We did a bad job getting them ready for this game and that's my fault. Our kids are going to regroup, they're resilient, they're good kids. We did a poor job preparing them.

Offense showed some good signs tonight.

Here's the problem, the whole game we were inconsistent. First kickoff of the game, we kick it where we're not supposed to. They get the ball at midfield. Offensively, we're not consistent. Defensively, we're not consistent stopping them. That's poor preparation on my part. That's on me. I thought (quarterback) Jordan (Beck) played with all of heart, character and resilience we could ask for.

Quite a few new starters on defense (Phil Sheridan, Thomas Kutschke, Tim Wilson). Did that have anything to do with what happened tonight?

I think it had to do with the fact I did a bad job getting our kids ready to play. You can blame any kid you want, but we're not in the business of blaming them. You blame me. I'm the guy who screwed this up.
