LFHS Open Doors Career Mentoring registration ends April 8. The sixth annual Open Doors Career Exploration Program will be held April 27-29. The purpose of this job-shadowing program is to provide students first-hand,
on-the-job experience with professionals in the community and with local volunteer agencies during the three days that students have off from school due to the Prairie State Achievement Exam for Juniors. More information can be found atwww.lfhs.org.

There will be a regular meeting of the Board of Education of Lake Forest Community High School District 115  at 7 p.m. April 12, in the board room, LFHS West Campus, 300 S. Waukegan Road.  The LFHS Administration will recommend the following plan to make-up the two February snow days to the Board of Education for their review and approval at the meeting:  The first day will be made up by counting Parent Teacher Conference Day as a day of attendance, as allowed by School Code. The second day will be made up by moving finals from May 31, June 1 and June 2 to June 1 (English and social studies), June 2 (math and world language) and June 3 (science and make-ups). The teacher work day and make-ups will move to June 6. Check www.lfhs.org after April 12 for confirmation of the Board’s approval.

AP Pre-Exam paperwork must be completed on either April 12 or April 13. Come to the Dave Miller Theater and bring a pencil. (This will take approx. 15 minutes). AP Testing dates are May 2-13. Lake Forest High School is excited to announce “ONE Week,” coming April 18-22.  “ONE Week” is a collaborative effort to celebrate Earth Week, while also focusing on students’ influence in their community and school environment.   These week-long events are sponsored and supported by the Environmental Club, Emotional Wellness Initiative, Student Council, National Honor Society, the Art Department, the Cafeteria Staff, and the APT. Student leaders, faculty, and the APT are planning meaningful attractions: a speech on global citizenship by local journalist, news anchor, and founder of Tallgrass Beef Co., Bill Kurtis; “Bike to School Day” complete with wholesome foods to sample; a unique presentation by 2006 LFHS graduate Kaitlin Rogers on her work with “Literacy Through Photography” in Tanzania; and a Health Fair featuring fitness classes and informative displays by local health organizations. The week will culminate with an optional Service Day with Deer Path Middle School and Lake Bluff Middle School April 22 (a day of non-attendance) from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by a celebratory lunch on the front lawn.

The annual LFHS Student Service Recognition Night ceremony will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 12 in the Raymond Moore Auditorium.  The event honors LFHS students who have contributed exceptional volunteer service to the school and community.

There will be a meeting for parents of junior and senior students from 7-8:30 p.m. April 14, featuring author Karen Levin Coburn in the Raymond Moore Auditorium, 1285 N. McKinley Road. Coburn is the co-author of the nationally acclaimed book “Letting Go: A Parents’ Guide to Understanding the College Years.” Coburn is coming to LFHS to guide parents of juniors and seniors through the journey before them: the admissions marathon; the separation journey; and the adolescent and intellectual development stages that take place from junior year of high school into the freshman year in college.

The Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Rotary Club is coordinating fundraising efforts for Shelter Boxes to help those left homeless in northern Japan by the recent earthquake and tsunami.  Shelter Boxes are specially designed for this type of disaster relief and contain a large tent, bedding, dishes and silverware for 10 people, a water purification system, a stove, cooking utensils, tools and children’s supplies, all contained in an impact resistant plastic shipping crate. Lake Forest High School will participate in the fundraising effort by accepting financial donations. Donations made payable to the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Rotary Club can be dropped off to Kathy O’Hara in Room 103C.  For questions, contact O’Hara at 582-7774 orkohara@lfschools.net.

The Lake Forest High School Foundation will host a benefit, “Planting a Foundation for Education,” to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Lake Forest High School. This event, which includes a luncheon and silent auction, will be held from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 26 at the Exmoor Country Club. The day will begin with a silent auction, including unique items from the community and a selection of Lake Forest High School special offerings.  Beautiful theme-oriented centerpieces will be available for sale and a raffle will be held for an Apple iPAD. The program will include the dedication of a painting by Mark McMahon, “Kids & Cars – a Classic Reunion” commissioned by the Foundation and underwritten by Knauz Motors in Lake Bluff.  Tickets are available from $75 per person.
