School of St. Mary Students Receive Chess Pointers

International players visit school's chess team.

Grandmaster Varuzhan Akobian recently gave some pointers to the chess class at the School of St. Mary's Primary Grade Center.

Akobian is friends with Shiva Maharaj, who is one of the teachers of the school's chess enrichment program. Akobian was the trainer of the U.S. Olympic Chess team in 2010 and continues to be a highly respected player nationally and internationally.

The school's chess club also received a visit from Victor Mikhalevski, who was a participant and the bronze medal winner for the Israeli Olympic Chess Team at the 2010 Olympiad. Mikhalevski came to Chicago to offer a workshop with Shiva  for advanced tournament players.

Such a great experience for the school kids to have been given an opportunity to obtain a few skills and tips on chess from 2 chess experts themselves. One persoanlly trained chess players in the Olympics and another is a player and Bronze medalist in the Olympics. A once in a lifetime experience and I hope the children appreciate the opportunity given and retain the skills imparted to them for a long period of time and put the expertise to good use.
