Lake Forest's Shea Wrestles Way Into Sectional

GYMNASTICS

Date: Jan. 31 

The Final Score: ; 2. Mundelein, 141.5; 3. Glenbrook South 133.2; 4. Glenbrook North, 129.675 

Scouts Top Performer: Kat McKeon placed first in the all-around with 37.325 while teammates Brittany Moccia took fourth at 36.3 and Kylie Carlson fifth with 36.175. McKeon Placed first on the uneven parallel bars (9.475), second on balance beam (9.325), fourth on floor exercise (9.25) and fifth in vault (9.275). 

Other Notable Scout Performances: Moccia captured first in vault (9.575), fourth on uneven parallel bars (9.125) and fifth on balance beam (8.875). Carlson grabbed first in floor exercise (9.6), took second in vault (9.475) and third on uneven parallel bars (9.250). 

Who’s Next: Niles North Sectional. The winners of the first five places in each individual event and the first five places in the All-Around sectional competition shall advance as "Ranked Qualifiers."  In addition, the twelve (12) best scorers in each individual event and in the All-Around competition from among all competitors in the sectionals in the event(s) who did not finish among the top five (5) shall also advance as "At Large Qualifiers."

The Bottom Line: The Scouts will be hard-pressed to win the Nile s North Sectional swith the likes of Stevenson and defending State champ Carmel in the field. However, a high enouigh score could be enough to give Lake Forest an at-large bnerth as a team. Individually, the same two schools, Stevenson and Carmel, plus Mundelein and Vernon Hills could make the competition just as tough to qualify for State.

WRESTLING

Date: Feb. 4 

The Final Score: 1. Barrington 233.5, 2. Deerfield 155.5, 3. Lake Zurich 123, 4. Cary Grove 103, 5. Buffalo Grove 101.5, 6. Stevenson 78.5, 7. Highland Park 66, 8. Palatine 27, . 

Scouts Top Performer:  finished third at 170 pounds to advance to the Feb. 10-11 Barrington Sectional. 

Other Notable Scout Performances: Regis Durbin placed fourth at 160 to give the Scouts 10 of their 24 points. 

Who’s Next: Barrington Sectional where first-through third-place finishers from the Libertyville, Stevenson, Glenbrook South and Jacobs Regionals converge. Top four place finishers in each weight classs advance to State meet, Feb. 16-18, in Champaign.

The Bottom Line: Shea stopped his first opponent in 4:53 on a technical fall before losing 10-4 to the eventual champion, Barrington's Cameron Thompson. Shea fought his way back by pinning Ian Burns of Stevenson in 3:52 and then outpointing Cary's Patrick O’Malley, 8-6, for third place and a spot in the Sectional. Durbin dropped his opening bout before climbing back into the consolation final and a chance to move on to the Sectional before falling 24-10 to Barrington's Michael Lurz.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

Date: Feb. 4 

The Final Score: 59, Lake Forest Academy 52 

Scouts Top Performer: Lake Forest High School freshman scored a team-high 19 points. 

Other Notable Scout Performances: Creighton Titus chipped in 10 points.

Who’s Next: Lake Forest (12-9 overall) hosts Deerfield at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 7), and recognizaes its senior players prior to playing Stevenson at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Feb. 10) at home.

The Bottom Line: With under 7 minutes to play and the Scouts losing 42-40, a bucket by Sam Downey and a pair of free throws by John Hayes gave Lake Forest a 64-62 lead. The Scouts never trailed again,and the players were mobbed by fans in front of a sold-out house. Lake Forest played without Carter Bass and Thomas Durrett, who are both out with concussions.

Date: Feb. 3 

The Final Score: Warren 50,  

Scouts Top Performer: Lake Forest's Evan Boudreaux tallied 11 points. 

Other Notable Scout Performances: Sam Downey added six points followed by five each from John Hayes and George Quall.

The Bottom Line: Lake Forest fell to 4-5 in the North Suburban Conference Lake Division. Warren led 25-14 at halftime and the closest the Scouts drew was 48-38 late in the fourth quarter.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Date: Jan. 31, Feb. 3

The Final Score: Libertyville 56, 

The Final Score: Lake Zurich 55, 

Scouts Top Performer: Lake Forest's Annie Keller scored 12 points and grabbed 4 rebounds against Libertyville. 

Other Notable Scout Performances: Against Libertyville, Mary Striedl snared 5 rebounds and 5 steals. Gabby Perino also made 4 steals.

Who’s Next: Lake Forest (3-24 overall) closes the regular season at Round Lake at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 7).

The Bottom Line: Lake Forest has not won a game since beating Deerfield on Dec. 20.

GIRLS' ICE HOCKEY

Date: Feb. 3

The Final Score: Loyola Academy 3, 

Scouts Top Performer: Lake Forest seniors Hailey Conroy and Marie Soukup scored goals. 

Other Notable Scout Performances: Lucy Baron assisted Soukup's goal.

Who’s Next: Lake Forest (20-5-3) competes in the President’s Cup Conference championship, tentatively scheduled for Feb. 11.
