Sports Digest: Scout Gymnasts Rule Regional

Boys' basketball team tops Evanston, girls edge Laze Zurich and wrestler Regis Durbin heads to Sectionals.

Gymnastics

The Final Score:        1. Lake Forest 143.45, 2. Deerfield 134.175, 3. Vernon Hills 133.95, 4. Niles North 122.05.

Scouts’ Star Performers:      Kylie Carlson finished second in the all around competition (37.1) while Kat McKeon placed third (36.625). Carlson won the vault (9.45), took second on floor exercise (9.5), fourth on the uneven parallel bars (9.275) and fifth on balance beam (8.875). McKeon was second in the vault (9.4) and bars (9.35), fourth on beam (8.925) and fifth on floor (8.95). They advanced to Sectionals in all events.

Other Notable Scout Performance:      Carly Schmidt earned seventh in the all around (35.475), third on the beam (8.95), fifth on both vault (9.175) and bars (8.65) and seventh on floor (8.7) to advance to Sectionals in all events. Brittany Moccia took second on beam (9.3) and fourth on floor (9.15) to move into the Sectional Meet in those events.

Who’s Next:   The Scouts compete in the Stevenson Sectional at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. 

The Bottom Line:      Moccia returned from an injury for her first competition since December to add valuable points to the Lake Forest score as the Scouts posted the ninth best team score in the state. Coach Robin Straus was happy with a team performance that “stuck” 19 of 20 events. This was Lake Forest’s fourth straight Regional crown. 

Boys’ Basketball

The Final Score:        Lake Forest 63, Evanston 45

Scouts’ Star Performer:       Evan Boudreaux had a double double with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Other Notable Scout Performance:             Sam Downey added 19 points and grabbed six boards.

Who’s Next:   The Scouts travel to Deerfield at 7 p.m. Tuesday. 

The Bottom Line:      After three straight losses by a total of nine points, the Scouts blew past a tough Evanston team to improve their record to 14/6.

Girls’ Basketball

The Final Score:        Lake Forest 53, Lake Zurich 49

Scouts’ Star Performer:       Gabby Perino scored 14 points, dished out four assists, stole the ball twice and had a pair of rebounds while Brooke Green added 11 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and six steals.

Other Notable Scout Performance:             Grace Torkelson chipped in eight tallies, five rebounds and an assist and steal each. Annie Keller hauled down eight rebounds to go with her seven points, three assists and two steals while Maddie Wells drained seven scores, hauled down six rebounds and stole the ball twice. Kate Arnson had eight rebounds, three steals and an assist to go with her two points.

Who’s Next:   The Scouts entertain North Chicago at 7 p.m. Tuesday. 

The Bottom Line:      A 14-4 third quarter surge made the difference for Lake Forest. Falling behind 16-12 at the end of the first quarter and trailing 30-25 at halftime, the Scouts spurted into the lead, 39-34, in the third quarter to secure the win. 

Wrestling

The Final Score:          1. Barrington 193, 2. Deerfield 191.5, 3. Cary Grove 175, 4. Stevenson 123.5, 5. Lake Zurich 97, 6. Buffalo Grove 70, 7. Highland Park 35.5, 8. Palatine 31.5, 9. Lake Forest 17.5

Scouts’ Star Performer:       Regis Durbin took second place in the Lake Zurich Regional in the 170-pound weight class.

Who’s Next:   Durbin competes in the Barrington Sectional Saturday.
