Lake Forest High School 2013 Grads Featured on New Mural

Updated rural featuring 2013 student-athletes will be unveiled Aug. 30.

The Lake Forest High School Boosters will unveil a new installation of the popular “Images of Excellence” mural Aug. 30 at Lake Forest High School’s Varsity Field in connection with the school’s special “double” field hockey / football home opener.

The new mural installation will feature images of 2013 LFHS graduates whose athletic and academic achievements at LFHS earned them significant honors, including 2013 LFHS Boosters Outstanding Senior Athlete Award recipients Billy Bund, Kylie Carlson, Tommy Kutschke and Isabelle Montagne. In all, 18 LFHS alumni will again be featured on the mural again this year.

The Scouts football team will face Racine St. Catherine’s High School at 7:30 p.m., preceded by a rematch of last season’s field hockey state championship game between LFHS and Loyola Academy at 5 p.m. The Scouts are the defending state champions in field hockey.

“Images of Excellence is an incredible monument to the values, spirit and ethics embodied in our school and our athletes,” said Steve Reimer, Boosters President. “The LFHS Boosters are proud to recognize these principles while celebrating student achievement as reflected in the 2013-2014 Images of Excellence mural. We appreciate the continued support and generosity of our presenting sponsor, the Lake Forester, in helping to make this mural possible.”

While athletically themed, the Images of Excellence mural does not celebrate athletic achievement alone. The vision for the mural is to use athletics as a backdrop to highlight positive virtues, values and qualities generally, and to feature academics and performing arts in a complementary way. To reinforce this vision, the following words appear on the mural, alongside photographic images of LFHS student- athletes in action: Acceptance, Character, Commitment, Courage, Empathy, Honor, Integrity, Insight, Leadership, Passion, Respect, Responsibility, Scholarship, Spirit, Sportsmanship and Success.

These words were selected to incorporate the following:

  • LFHS Boosters’ mission and mantra: Supporting Athletic Success, Spirit and Sportsmanship
  • LFHS District 115’s mission: To inspire the passion to learn, the insight to know oneself, and the courage to make a difference
  • The core principles of LFHS’s Emotional Wellness Initiative: Acceptance, Empathy, Integrity, and Responsibility/Accountability.
  • Other complementary attributes that are considered in selecting recipients for various senior scholarships and awards on LFHS Honors Night.

"Lake Forest is a community that strives for and embraces excellence. Our teams' successes reflect those aspirations and expectations,” said Michael Simeck, superintendent of schools for Lake Forest School districts 67 and 115. “The Boosters' support for our students and programs is as impressive as it is instrumental in our teams' achievements. We thank the LFHS Boosters for their continued support of projects like ‘Images of Excellence’ and the experiences they make possible for our students."

The process used in selecting the 18 students featured on the Images of Excellence mural follows the existing nomination and selection processes for key Honors Night awards, including the LFHS Boosters Outstanding Senior Athlete Award, the Senior Scholar-Athlete Award, the Bill Rawson Memorial Award and the Gayla Clemons Athletic Award, among others. This approach recognizes that the criteria for these Honors Night awards mirror many of the virtues and values described above, and is intended to assure objectivity in the mural selection process.
