Schmidt, Schlachtenhaufen Advance to State Track Finals

Soccer team takes Regional crown.

Lake Forest High School Pole vaulter Carly Schmidt and runner Helen Schlachtenhaufen advanced to the championship round of the State Meet with their preliminary round performances today at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Not to be outdone, the Scout soccer team blanked Antioch, 5-0, today to win the Antioch Regional championship and advance to the Lakes Sectional at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Lake Forest is seeded second in the Sectional behind Deerfield.

Schmidt was one of 10 vaulters to clear 11-0 and move into a position to become a state champion. Three more qualifiers advanced with a leap of 10-9.

In last week’s Sectional Meet, Schmidt cleared 13-0, three inches off the existing state record and 18 inches better than any other performance in Illinois.

Schlachtenhaufen ran the 1,600-meter run in 5:03.63 to join 11 other athletes in Saturday’s race for the gold medal. Elle Chody will be competing for a medal in the 3,200 Saturday. She did not have a preliminary race today.

The only other Scout qualifiers, the 4x800 relay team of Elise Wong, Callie Schmidt, Lisa Bennatan and Caroline Marwede, covered the distance in 10:00.34 and did not advance to the finals.
