Animal Hospital Connection To Heartland Animal Shelter Saves Pets

Fund-raisers assist efforts to help pets.

Heartland Animal Shelter is a no-kill humane organization that finds homes for hundreds of homeless pets.

What makes it different than most of the other shelters?

It is owned by, and on the same property, as Preiser Animal Hospital in Northbrook. Dr. Herbert Preiser opened Heartland Animal Shelter in October of 2002 to save the lives of pets who might otherwise be euthanized because of overpopulation and abandonment.

Heartland Animal Shelter, located at 2975 Milwaukee Ave. in Northbrook, is not only an active rescue organization, but they are connected to the North Shore community with many innovative fundraising events.

There is a Belly Dancer fundraiser, Shimmy for the Shelter, tonight (Aug. 13) at The Vittum Theatre, 1012 N. Noble St., in Chicago.

Another event is slated for Sept. 18 called Hogs for Dogs, a ride starting at Heartland Animal Shelter and ending with food at Side-Outs Bar & Eatery, 4018 Roberts Road, in Island Lake.

Food is free for registered attendees. Pre-registration is $25 per person in advance and $30 at the door.

Their website also publishes pets available for adoption, like Baxter, a nearly 4-year-old male hound/terrier, or Kylie, a green-eyed calico cat just about 6 years old.
