Tour the Historic Adlai Stevenson Home

Are you a history buff looking for something interesting to do this weekend? A lecture and tour of the Adlai Stevenson home will be held Sunday.

If you've ever wanted to get a look inside the historic Adlai E. Stevenson estate in Mettawa, here's the perfect opportunity.

Local historian Joe Bean will present a free lecture on the home at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 9. Register on-line through the Cook Memorial Library or call (847) 362-2330.

Guided tours of the former home of Ellen Borden and Adlai E. Stevenson II, who was Illinois governor from 1949 to 1953 and ran twice for president, will be held at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. for a fee of $5 for Lake County residents and $7 for non-residents.

Tickets can be purchased on-line through the Lake County Forest Preserve District or on-site.

Free self-guided tours run from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The 70-acre property, which Stevenson called "the farm," is located in southeast Lake County in Mettawa. The entrance is on Saint Mary’s Road between Everett Road and Illinois Route 60 (Townline Road).

The estate is a designated Illinois Historic Site and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.The home is located in Captain Daniel Wright Woods Forest Preserve with separate parking available off of Saint Mary's Road just north of the preserve's main entrance.
