I am a Lake Forest resident that commutes to Chicago regularly. In the past, there used to be anRead More excellent WIFI service at the East train station (LFGuest) that now it seems that has been discontinued, or is not working properly. Can the city look into this? I found this service extremely valuable for the daily commuters. Thank you so much. Cele.
Celerino Abad-Zapatero April 23, 2014 at 09:30 am
The story about the LFHS offender has an inconsistency in the number of hours of community serviceRead More that Mr. Davidson has to serve. The story in the Patch mentions 1,500; the Daily Herald says 150. What is the correct number? Cele.
Emily Stone (Editor) April 23, 2014 at 09:46 am
Hi Cele, Thanks for pointing that out. The Herald must have changed that number since yesterday.Read More I've updated it. -Emily

Illinois is in the top for all taxes yet we are the most in debt. Why do we continue to vote theseRead More politicians in offfice? One word....union power. In other news, these same democrat politicians just re elected the devil himself, Mike Madigan to a 5th term of democratic house leader. Expect more of the same high tax, high corruption form of governance to continue unless non union voters do something about this. State union voters like this and like to see the non union state citizens suffer
JR April 23, 2014 at 09:47 am
Even if we threw them in jail their brainless voting bases would still reelect them.

Illinois is one of the top most corrupt states in the USA. I have two more years in this GodRead More forsaken state, then after my daughter finishes school, I'm out of here! My home may be paid off, but I still pay at least $500 a month for property taxes--and I live in the older section with a 55 year old house!!
The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions.
Porter gladstone April 23, 2014 at 09:47 am
mob mentality. people on this thread dont even understand the ruling. tt, the comparison toRead More sports is absurd. baseball 8% black. hockey? swimming? etc. i dont hear complaints by minority leaders complaing about every facet of life. there is a belief that low test scores , a dearth of black ceo's , etc must be explained by some measure of systemic discrimination. women do it. minorities. heck go to any youth sports program and youll find parents complaing about playing time and favoritism. people complain. sometimes theyre right.
Old Pizza April 23, 2014 at 09:54 am
College admission should be based on scholastic achievement, period.
Observor April 23, 2014 at 10:03 am
One of the primary reasons blacks lag in admission to elite colleges without affirmative action isRead More that a disproportionate number of them come out of horror show urban school systems where they are trapped by an unholy alliance of the teacher unions and the Democrat party. The DTC keeps the unions working regardless of incompetence and in return the unions bankroll the DTC with their members' dues money. Affirmative action is just a way to paper over that "inconvenient truth."
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.

Great points, Jeanne! If we want to innovate we need critical thinkers who are flexible in theirRead More approach to problems. "Oh this didn't work because X but Y might. Oh here comes Z which I hadn't even considered but maybe the answer is in there."
Jennifer April 23, 2014 at 10:08 am
OK, so it doesnt bother you at all that the textbook publishers will now be able to put out only aRead More few curricula, all aligned to the same standards, which they determined themselves, which will reduce their costs tremendously. And you trust that what they put in will be OK. And have YOU actually read the standards, or only a few snippets, which YOU are relying on for your opinion? I havent read them all. I have read comparisons of some of the old standards, side-by-side with the new standards, and it seems that whoever wrote the standards did not have the gift for brevity and clarity that one would hope for. Also, the gag order on teachers and administrators really makes it difficult to determine what educators really think, wouldn't you say? I have read many articles from CC supporters that talk about an expanded school day so that teachers have time for the in-services they need to learn the "new techniques required" to teach the common core. So it doesnt sound to me like even supporters of the CC think this is just regular teaching, at a different level. But unfortunately, we can only find out what the "new techniques" are by interrogating our children after the fact, since teachers - who don't like the CC in general - cant tell us why. My vice-principal sis-in-law refers to "Children of the Core" and it is just as creepy as it sounds. And as you keep going back to local-control of curricula - the states have individually signed contracts with Pearson Publishing, which include gag orders on teachers and administrators. That "control" was never given to the local level - schools are bound by it whether they like it or not. That is at least the case with the contract in NYS, although I can't believe the other State's contracts vary much from this EXTREME protection of a private company. How can there be local control, if parents are not allowed to hear from the teachers and administrators of their local schools? You may think I am mindlessly parroting, but I wonder why you are so mindlessly defending. At least all the other people involved seem to have gotten paid by Bill and Melinda Gates. Oh, and that chirping noise from the teachers opposed to CC? Maybe that's the sound of people decid ing to keep their jobs.

Though fatalities to older drivers do increase with age, 23% of all auto collisions involve cellRead More phones. Drivers 16 to 19 have the highest accident rates. The higher fatality rates for older drivers is attributed to their inability to recover from injuries that younger drivers could recover from. In all age groups - male drivers have higher accident rates and fatality rates. The most dangerous driver is the driver of any age texting or using a cell phone. Venting about older drivers may be fun, but not very informed. Male teens have the highest accident rates. But like any other group there are good drivers and careless among teen male drivers. We should all put the cell phone away while driving and this would drop the accident rate.

@Stones - I actually agree with you. My problem is simply the economic conditions presentlyRead More affecting Illinois, the lack of any credible solution and the nature of the Chicago and Cook County governments which can't seem to keep crooks out of office. I think Presidential libraries serve valuable purposes (and that doesn't matter which President it happens to be) can provide economic benefits to the area in which the library is location (whether short/long term is another question which I am not in a position to answer).

I would suggest that Chicago be required to have a credit check performed before any publicRead More assistance is provided to them. @ George, I would love to hear what state your moving to. I'm just tired of the same old crap thatRead More will continue no matter who gets in. I'm in Oswego and the school district is $800 million in the hole. They've spent like a bunch of drunken sailors with not much to show for it. My taxes are more than my PMI each month. We're having to give our homes away just to move.........This ? goes out to anyone. Has Rauner said anything about not collecting a pension from the state if he wins Governor? @Greg Smith - LOL. More nonsense from the Rush crowd. Millions of blacks who are just asRead More disadvantaged as your scumbag gang banger buddies don't drive around shooting up their neighborhoods. You are also, clearly a racist. There are millions of white Americans who aren't born into money and who are unemployed. You should be thankful that we still have a war on drugs. Grumpy Old Man April 22, 2014 at 07:25 am
I should have said no Ford Foundation grants. There will always be foundations giving out grants.Read More Hopefully they won't do as the Ford Foundation did and give a grant to Jeff Ford and his gang.
Edward Andrysiak April 22, 2014 at 01:09 pm
Well, here comes more get rid of the guns talk. You seldom hear why the gangs are at war. The reasonRead More is market share. It's about money. That is how they support themselves. So, let's concentrate on removing what the fight over...drug sales, prostitution and the like. Rid the neighborhoods of that and there will be less to fight over. Squeeeeeze their profits down to zero and there will be less violence!

Dorie, stowing away on a plane is a crime. And no, the boy himself did not pose a threat. But theRead More fact that he (anyone) can get that close to a plane poses a threat. I agree with B. Dub 100%! How was this kid able to scale a fence and just walk right over to theRead More plane? TSA: for all the harassing you do in the terminal...you ain't all that!! As far as the kid being a runaway..maybe he does face some serious abuse issues at home. He's damn lucky to be alive. But, I raised three boys, and a 16 year old boy can runaway for any collage of reasons. My kids never ran away but, I'm wondering if the fact that the plane was going to HAWAII has anything to do with it. It sounds a little compulsive to me. CPA need good follow up on this. Thank you lucky stars kid!

Agranon - I'm a moron because I am tired of everybody and his mother trying to put themselves inRead More every story? Then so be it - I'm a moron. To be honest, I am also really tired of all the people that were compelled to run the Boston Marathon because "I had to finish for all those who couldn't." Get over yourself. It was a tragedy. Those responsible should be ripped apart by dogs. I sincerely hope the families of those affected can move on somehow. But how does Mary Jane Smith running the marathon help ANYBODY but herself? She's not doing it for "those who can't". She's doing it to maybe get on TV and she's probably feeling a little sanctimonious because she ran 26.2 miles and you didn't. It's like, "what did YOU do to help these people?" Same as you - nothing.
