Severe Weather Possible Monday and Tuesday

Large hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes are all possible.

Get ready for some storms. The storm system that dropped large hail and tornadoes on parts of Iowa, Kansas and Oklahoma is now headed toward Illinois. The National Weather Service has placed most of Illinois in the "slight risk" category for severe weather on Monday and Tuesday. The main threats on both days will be damaging winds and large hail. The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center noted in its technical discussions that isolated tornadoes are also possible on Monday and Tuesday. "The most violent storms will ignite during the afternoon and evening hours as daytime heating causes instability," Accuweather.com Meteorologist Meghan Evans wrote in her forecast. James Herber, Banker and Veteran, Dies

A Lake Forest resident since 1961, Herber was 86.

James Frederick Herber, 86, a Lake Forest banker, veteran of two wars and a 52-year Lake Forest resident, died Tuesday, according to information from Wenban Funeral Home. Starting his career in his father’s Longmont, CO, bank Herber moved to Lake Forest in 1961. He joined the First National Bank of Lake Forest which later became Northern Trust Company. He worked there for more than 30 years. Herber owned a historic cottage in Lake Forest and was proud of it and the flower gardens that surrounded it, according to Wenban. Born October 8, 1926, in Seattle, Herber moved with his family to Longmont in 1939. After serving as an enlisted man in the Army Air Force with the occupation forces in Germany in World War II, he returned home to graduate …

Schmidt Soars to State Pole Vault Title

Lake Forest High School senior tops closest competitor by a foot.

Everything was working right for Lake Forest High School pole vaulter Carly Schmidt today at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston as she became the Illinois state champion but it was not perfect for an athlete with Olympic aspirations. After a fourth-place medal last year and a State Meet that disappointed her, Schmidt was focused on correcting every mistake and adding perfection in 2013. It paid off with a leap of 13-0, a foot higher than anyone else in the event, and a gold medal. Earlier: Schmidt, Schlachtenhaufen Advance to State Track Finals “Everything was right,” Schmidt said. “It’s been coming (along) all year. The last two weeks I really got in a groove. Scouts Win Tennis Sectional

All Lake Forest High School participants advance to State Meet.

Lake Forest High School’s tennis team dominated the Warren Sectional today in Gurnee picking up more hardware for the Scout’s trophy case finishing the meet with 35 points followed by Warren with 25. In addition to taking the team title, the Scouts advanced two singles players and both doubles teams to the State Meet Thursday through Saturday at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights.
