Carmichael, Schmidt hit runway this weekend in Charleston.
Carolina Carmichael and Carly Schmidt aren’t just two of the premier female pole vaulters in the state of Illinois; they are students of the sport. When time allows, the Lake Forest High School standouts can be found watching videos of some of the best vaulters in the world. Carmichael admits she fixates on Steve Hooker, the Olympic gold medalist from Australia (see attached video), and U.S. women’s record holder Jenn Schur. Schmidt can be found studying women’s world record holder Yelena Isinbaeva of Russia (video attached). “I’ll watch as many videos and YouTube highlights as I can, especially in slow motion,” said Carmichael, a 5-foot-4 senior. “The men are so explosive and I enjoy watching different drills.” Carmichael and Schmidt head…

Lake Forest resident blames Supreme Court ruling for making Ricketts' $10 million soft money advertising plan possible.
Shoppers at Deerfield Square were not ready to abandon their loyalty to the Chicago Cubs over owner Joe Ricketts’ plans to spend $10 million to finance an effort to produce negative advertising criticizing President Barack Obama. The same people expressed anger that one person, in this case Ricketts, would spend so much money to affect the outcome of the presidential election by purchasing advertising at the time of the Democratic Convention in September. The controversy broke Thursday morning when the New York Times published a story disclosing the plan hatched between Ricketts and Republican political professionals. Later Thursday, Ricketts backed off some of the more controversial parts of the proposal. Leslie Gordon of Lake Forest …

Patch user "mp" guessed that the teams would combined for 33 runs, two fewer than the actual total of 35.
Editor's note: Due to an oversight, the winner of this contest was incorrectly announced on Tuesday. We sincerely regret the error. It shouldn’t be surprising that most entrants in Patch’s Pro Baseball Pick ‘Em Contest did not give the batters enough credit in making their selections. Milwaukee outscored Chicago 18-17 in the three-game series over the weekend, and few participants counted on 35 total runs from the teams battling for last place in the division. By guessing the teams would score 33 runs (Brewers 19, Cubs 14), Patch user "mp" was chosen to win the $100 gift card good for pro baseball apparel. Thanks to everyone who participated. Enjoy the rest of the baseball season!
