Parents Should Talk to Their Kids About Suicide, Depression

Mental Health panel said talking about suicides does not push someone to the act.

A panel of mental health professionals told a packed house of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff parents Tuesday night not to be afraid to broach the subjects of depression and suicide with their kids. In fewer than three months, Lake Forest High School students Edward Schutt, Will Laskero-Tesocki and Farid Hussain have been struck and killed by a train. To date, only Hussain's cause of death has been ruled a suicide by the Lake County Coroner's Office. The tragedies galvanized a group of local ministers with the help of organizations and agencies geared to helping adolescents to combine on a program titled “Helping Parents Through Difficult Times” at the Gorton Community Center auditorium. After the presentation I asked Bob Edgar about the "Werther Effect", the copycat effect, and whether or not there were new studies that had debunked that work. He immediately and emphatically said the Werther effect is real, it is well known, that copycats do occur, and that we need to take that into account.
