  Here is the speech given by 1st Sgt. Lester Abanto at Monday's Memorial Day service. Wow, words cannot describe how proud I am to be present to represent the Weapons Company 2nd Battalion 24th Marines. I am part of a small active duty staff that is stationed down the road at Fort Sheridan. We moved down here in July 2010 from Waukegan. Our staff’s mission is to support and assist in training the reserve component, so that in the event they are called upon by our country, they will be ready. We also render funeral services to Marine Corps veterans. We also have the noble duty of informing families of this area that their loved one has passed on. Mock Political Conference Awakens Future Voters

Fourteen LFHS female students found the recent Illini Girls State opened their eyes to the political process and their role in it.

Mary Dooley admits she did not know much about politics. But that has changed for the Lake Forest High School senior-to-be. She and 13 classmates recently attended Illini Girls State — a weeklong political simulation conference for high school females. Through hands-on participation, the girls were introduced to the American political system. Beyond gaining experience in leadership roles, many, like Dooley, expanded their political views in ways they didn’t expect. “I kind of brushed politics off before, but now I will be much more active as a voter,” Dooley said. Dooley gained a greater respect for politics by playing the role of a city mayor. Upon arrival, the conference attendees were divided between the Nationalist and Federalist …

Lake Forest High School Student's Essay Earns 1st Place

American Legion Post 264 recognizes Natalie Yang at Veteran's Day assembly.

As part of its Nov. 11 Veteran's Day Observation at Lake Forest High School, American Legion Post 264 of Lake Forest recognized the winning entry in its annual Veteran's Day essay contest. The winner was Natalie Yang, who will recive $1,000 to donate to a club or athletic team at Lake Forest High School. A second-place award of $500 went to Sabrina Acker and a third -place award of $250 went to Henry Grob.
