Deer Path Middle School Students Donate More Than $16,000 to Benny's World

Students feel empowered by voting to pick charitable cause.

For the past nine years, Deer Path Middle School students have staged walk-athons to raise money for a charitable cause. "We knew we were walking for something, but it really didn't mean much," said one student. This year, given a chance for the first time to vote on the cause of their choice, Deer Path students responded by raising more than $16,000. A majority of the money will be donated to Benny's World, a non-profit foundation established to fund research to find a cure for pediatric brain stem tumors, specifically targeting Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma. Cherokee 4th Graders Raise Money To Support Classmate's Cause

Students manned lemonade and baked goods stands to raise donations for Benny's World.

When Cherokee Elementary School fourth grade students chose Benny’s World as its charitable cause, they were also telling one of their classmates, Bella Watters, that her younger brother’s passing was not in vain. “It made me feel happy because I know that people actually wanted to help find a cure,” she said. Bella’s brother, Benny, died just shy of age 6 on Sept. 8, 2010, due to a brain stem tumor. Their parents, Lisa and Brendan Watters, created Benny’s World, a non-profit foundation to fund research to find a cure for pediatric brain stem tumors. Cherokee Students Will Raise Funds for Benny's World With Lemonade Stands

Eighth grade graduation is June 2 at Lake Forest High School's west campus.

Cherokee Elementary School’s fourth graders invite the Lake Forest community to join them in their service-learning project to raise funds for Benny’s World, a non-profit foundation established to fund research to find a cure for pediatric brain stem tumors. On May 21, students will host a lemonade stand and bake sale at four different locations in Lake Forest. The lemonade stands will be located at Market Square, Deer Path Middle School, and Jewel from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and at the LFSA soccer fields at LFHS West Campus, 300 S. Waukegan Road, from noon-2 p.m. Lake Forest residents, Lisa and Brendan Watters, established Benny’s World in 2008 when their son Benny was diagnosed with a brain stem tumor that took his life last year. Deer Path Middle School Students Unite to Support Benny's World

Students, staff participate in walk fund-raiser.

Deer Path Middle School's student body and faculty will come together to walk in support of Benny's World at 2:45 p.m. Friday (May 20) at the school, Benny's World is a non-profit foundation established to fund research to find a cure for pediatric brain stem tumors, specifically targeting Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). This organization was selected after a presentation by a group of fifth and sixth graders. In addition to the walk, Lisa Watters, Benny's mother, will speak with students at DPM's Band/Orchestra/Chorus concerts/assemblies at 9:45 and 10:15 a.m. Friday (May 20).
