Lake Forest Community Comes Out To Support Scouts in Football Playoff Loss

Well over 8,000 fans converge on Varsity Field to watch Lake Forest play Cary-Grove in semifinal game Saturday.

Kick off was scheduled for 4 p.m., but Lake Forest was ready for football well before that time Saturday.  The main parking lost east of Varsity Field was completely full by 2:30 p.m, the home stands filled with fans not soon after. One driver pulling into the lot asked a security guard, "is there a football game going on?" His response was dripping with sarcasm, "that's what I hear." With the exception of that driver, there didn't appear to be a single person in Lake Forest not aware the Scouts were playing a football game Saturday. From the "Blue-Out" and "Scout-Out" dress code to "Fear the Spear" written on business windows and signs all over town, Lake Forest's 6A semifinal game against Cary-Grove was clearly a community-wide event. …

Night of Second Chances for Many Lake Forest Football Players As They Advance to Quarterfinals

In a memorable night at Varsity Field in front of a full house, Lake Forest's football team wins its second playoff game for the first time since 1993.

We all believe in second chances. After all, it's an American pastime.  Just ask Jimmy Stewart.  In a game George Bailey himself would have loved to watch, Lake Forest's football team showed life can be wonderful when presented with opportunities to redeem itself. Friday's 23-21 victory over a more-talented Lakes team was proof the Scouts are playing the 2012 season with a unified purpose propelling them into a position rarely reached in the history of the school.  "The thing we talk to them all the time about is all the effort and hard work will pay off, it won’t be over until we determine its over," coach Chuck Spagnoli said. "Our kids have been an extremely resiliant, extremely competitive group." Which starts with the quarterback, …

Lake Forest Takes Out Anger on Zion in Lopsided Homecoming Win

The Scouts 41-13 victory was important for their season, but also for their psyche after week-long teacher's strike.

The rock band Aerosmith years ago wrote a song titled, "Don't Get Mad, Get Even." If you watched the Lake Forest Scouts demolish the Zion Zee-Bees 41-13 Friday night, you would say they followed that creed.  But there was plenty of anger. They just took it out on an opponent they could clearly define.  "We had a great game. We are stronger as a team," said senior quarterback Andrew Clifford, who threw for 166 yards on 15-of-21 passing. "We really grew as a team and we showed it tonight." Poor Zion. They didn't know what hit them. Not only did they have to face a Scouts team that is extremely balanced on offense--running backs Hub Cirame and Scott Powell combined for 144 yards rushing with birthday boy Cirame scoring three touchdowns--and …

Lake Forest Football Standout Jordan Beck Makes Difficult College Choice

The Scouts quarterback chooses a future in the military over football.

The hardest decision anyone can be forced to make is choosing between two loves. Recent Lake Forest High School graduate Jordan Beck’s college choice came down to just that. You know him as the football player, captain and quarterback of the 2011 North Suburban Conference championship Scouts. What you may not know is what he aspires to be: a member of the military. In the arena of competing desires, the soldier won out. “I’ve been playing football for 11 or 12 years and it's something I’ve never not played. I’ll miss it,” said Beck. “But being a soldier is what I want to be, and football takes a back seat to that.” Eschewing an offer to play football at Whittenberg University, a Division 3 school in Ohio, Beck is taking his leadership …
