If Susan is a mentor, then don't expect conversations to receive follow-up, or calls to be returned. Rage against the machine, the township office is a red herring, the law practice has historically been insider business affairs with Lake County government(s) and special interest clients.   more ›

Legislators Talk Pensions, Health Care, Jobs

Dold, Garrett stress cooperation at Chamber breakfast.

Whether they were discussing how to tackle health care, pension reform or unemployment, legislators at last Friday's Legislative Outlook kept returning to the same solution: more cooperation. Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) said elected officials need to reach across party lines more frequently to pass job legislation. State Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) said legislators need to sit down with unions to deal with rising pension costs. And Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services Director Julie Hamos encouraged small business owners to offer suggestions for the institution of the Affordable Care Act. "The number one issue that we face not only in Illinois but across the country is jobs and the economy," Dold said to the …

Lake Forest Plan Commission's Recommendation Allows Barat Reunification to Move Forward

A 3-2 vote allows a special use permit combining Woodlands Academy, former Barat campus as one educational unit.

The Lake Forest Plan Commission took the next step to reunite the campuses of Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart and the former Barat College by recommending Wednesday night that the City Council grant a special use permit to limit the combined parcels to educational purposes. When it meets Jan. 3, if the City Council follows the Plan Commission’s suggestion, it would extend Woodlands’ special use permit to use its existing grounds for educational purposes to cover the additional 23 acres of the former Barat property. That City Council action would clear the way for the new owner, who has chosen to remain  anonymous, to obtain the proper permits to demolish Old Main. This is one of its conditions before making the gift to Woodlands. The…

Lake Forest Population Decrease Could Mean Lost Revenue

2010 Census indicates 3.4 percent drop.

In the last 10 years Lake Forest’s population decreased by 3.4 percent, according to preliminary observations of the 2010 Census. This drop in population could result in a revenue loss of anywhere from $77,000 to $84,000 in federal funding. According to the census results presented to city leaders at Monday’s City Council meeting, the current population is 19,375 residents, compared to 20,059 residents in the year 2000 – or loss of 684 residents. The drop in population falls in line with population trends in other nearby suburbs, including Lake Bluff, which reportedly had a population drop of 5.5 percent, Highland Park, which dropped to 5.1 percent, and Libertyville at 2.1 percent. The city of Chicago also experienced a population drop of …

I think taking a new census would be a big waste of money. The City Council should first check the whole process if they have questions as to how it was conducted. Special teams were sent out early to make sure that college students leaving before the regular census was taken would be counted. This was also done for many big housing units, for example at Great Lakes Navy Base. If residents did …   more ›

New feature will provide residents 24/7 access to city information.

Lake Forest officials unveiled a new Citizen Communications Center on the city's website, designed to provide residents with more timely access to city departments and information earlier this week. Located on the home page of the city's website at www.cityoflakeforest.com, the Citizen's Communications Center will give residents immediate access to view city-scheduled meetings and events, complete surveys, find answers to frequently asked questions, submit service requests for work like pothole or streetlight repair, and receive electronic newsletters. Residents will also be able to find out information about various recreational activities, and provide feedback on city issues to city staff, as well as gain access to needed information …
