Dwyer sends his teammates a special flag.
Members of the Lake Forest Swim Club got a special treat this week from one of their teammates. The teammate happened to be Olympic Swimmer Conor Dwyer and the gift was an Olympic flag from London signed by Dwyer, a member of the gold medal winning men’s 800-meter freestyle relay team who placed fifth in the 400 freestyle. “It’s cool having people from the swim club in the Olympics, “Yana Dessev, one of Conor’s teammates, said. North Shore native joins Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte and Rickey Berens to win Olympic 800-meter freestyle relay.
Update (5:15 p.m.) Lake Forest Swim Club member and North Shore native Conor Dwyer joined Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte and Ricky Berens to earn the North Shore’s second gold medal of the Olympics Games today. Dwyer joined Lake Forest’s Matt Grevers as the second local athlete to bring a gold medal home from London. The local gathering was at Stormy’s in Northfield where the crowd erupted when the quartet including Dwyer secured the gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle Relay. Joan Sullivan dropped to her knees in prayer, her face practically enraptured, and at one point moved her arms in a swimmer’s motion. Lake Forest Swim Club member and Winnetka native clocks third fastest time in prelims but does not earn medal.
(Update 2:15 p.m.) Winnetka native and Lake Forest Swim Club member Conor Dwyer fell shy of an Olympic medal today with a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle in 3:46.39, .15 seconds slower than his preliminary heat. The race was won by China’s Sui Yang in a world record time of 3:40.18 with South Korea’s Pak Taew-hwan earning the silver medal and Peter Vanderkaay of the United States wining bronze. (Earlier 1 p.m.) In one of the first Olympic events, Conor Dwyer was one of the fastest. The Winnetka resident, Lake Forest Swim Club member and Loyola Academy alum had the third-fastest time in the 400-meter freestyle qualifying swim today registering a 3:46.24. Four local athletes begin their quest for Olympic gold when the 2012 London Olympic Games start at 1:30 p.m. today (London Time) with the opening ceremonies. American swimmers Matt Grevers of Lake Forest and Conor Dwyer of Winnetka start racing Saturday while Deerfield High School graduate and Riverwoods native Christina Loukas will wait until August 3. Lake Forest High School graduate and Israeli team member, Jillian Schwartz, starts competing in the pole vault August 4. Though only some of their performances will be on national television, every jump, dive and swim can be seen live by computer streaming through Comcast or other Internet providers. Winnetka’s Conor Dwyer will be making his first Olympic appearance when he competes in men’s swimming at the London Olympics. The Loyola Academy graduate and Lake Forest Swim Club member will be competing in the 400 freestyle and will be part of the 800-relay team along with Charlie Houchin, Ryan Lochte, Matt McLean, Michael Phelps and Davis Tarwater. Dwyer will compete in the 400 freestyle preliminary heats Saturday at 10:50 a.m. London time or 4:50 a.m. Chicago team. The top eight swimmers from all the heats will move to the finals later Saturday at 7:49 p.m. in London or 1:49 p.m. here. Dwyer may also been seen as part of the 4x200 freestyle relay team. The Loyola Academy graduate and Winnetka native placed 2nd in the 400-meter freestyle and 3rd in the 200-individual medley at the Olympic Trials in Omaha; he will represent the U.S. in London starting July 27.
North Shore native Conor Dwyer is headed to the Olympics, to represent the United States, and his hometown of Winnetka, in London later this month. Dwyer, 23, a Loyola Academy graduate, took second place in the 400-meter freestyle event June 25 at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska. That placement qualified him for the U.S. Olympic Swim Team, along with 47 others who vied for the coveted honor. “It was unbelievable after the 400; it was a lot of emotion and it was hard for me to put it into words, I’ve put so much work in over the last 11 months,” Dwyer said. “It was breathtaking.” Dwyer also placed third in the 200-meter individual medley (IM) and fourth in the 200-meter freestyle events during the 10-day trials that ended July …
