Will All Lake Forest Pay Onwentsia’s Taxes?

Pending court decision would take golf courses off tax roll and shift burden to all community taxpayers.

A property tax appeal by the Onwentsia Club could have far reaching effects on Lake County taxpayers and those in Lake Forest in particular as well as communities throughout the state. As the appeal stands, country club land, including improvements such as clubhouses, would be granted open space status and therefore would receive a zero assessment. “The public needs to know what benefits these organizations, country clubs, are getting. Should we be providing tax relief for them?” Lake County Assessor Martin Paulsen said. He said the ruling could result in a significant shift in the tax burden. Lake Forest's Conway Farms Sits, Waits to See if PGA Comes Calling

Doesn't hurt to have World's No. 1 player as promoter.

When you have the world's No. 1 professional golfer praising your course as the next site for a PGA event in the Chicago area, you can afford to sit and wait. Luke Donald, who is a member of Conway Farms Golf Club, said Monday that he would like to see the BMW Championship select the Lake Forest course for the 2013 edition. Donald, who has earned just over $5 million in earnings this year, made the remarks after finishing with an 8-under 276 or five strokes behind winner Justin Rose at last weekend's BMW Championship at Cog Hill in Lemont. The tournament will move to Indianapolis next year and is slated for Denver in 2014, leaving a window of opportunity to return the tournament to the Chicago area.
