Newsweek Names Lake Forest High School #167 in USA, 7th in State

The magazine's 2013 rankings were published this week.

On mobile? You can see interactive map here. Newsweek has ranked Lake Forest High School as the #211 high school in the country and seventh best in Illinois. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about Lake Forest High School's ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. Lake Forest Community High School District 115 Superintedent Michael Simeck thinks the ranking only starts to scratch the surface explaining the school's excellence. “Lake Forest High School is consistently ranked as one of the top schools in the state and nation," Simeck said. "Of course we are …

Lake Forest High School Ranked Among Toughest in Illinois

Lake Forest High School is among the most challenging public high schools in the United States, according to annual rankings by the Washington Post.

Does your teenager complain about classes and homework at Lake Forest High School? He or she might be justified in griping. According to annual rankings created by the Washington Post, LFHS is among the most challenging public high schools in the country. In Illinois, Lake Forest High School ranks 28. Washington Post columnist Jay Mathews has rated public high schools around the country for the past 15 years based on something called the “Challenge Index,” according to a press release. The index takes the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at the school next year and divides it by the number of seniors who graduated in May or June.  “With a few …

You are absolutely right, but interestingly, I think that LFHS gives kids ignored by this metric the opportunity to go to CLC and start CLC programs. These are exactly the great experiences and readiness opportunities that don't show up in a metric, especially this metric. My point is that you have to take a whole bunch of these metrics to judge a school, Looking at a ranking without understanding…   more ›

Middle Schoolers Needed for Hershey Track Meet

Middle school athletes from all communities including Deerfield, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Buffalo Grove and others can participate in the free HERSHEY'S Track & Field Games to be held at Deerfield High School in May.

The Deerfield Park District is hoping to get the word out to more middle school athletes about the upcoming HERSHEY'S Track & Field Games at Deerfield High School May 19. In previous years, more than 40 students participated in the event but attendance is now down to about 12 to 25, reported the Chicago Tribune. "I'm surprised we don't get more because it is a free event," Deerfield Park District recreation Supervisor Jim Gariti told the Tribune. "The kids who do come to the event have a great time. For those who don't play baseball, softball, basketball, soccer and just want to run — this is great." The HERSHEY’S Track & Field Games are the largest youth sports program of its kind in North America, with hundreds of thousands of children …

See Who Jumped in the Lake Saturday

Hundreds of people joined police officers and student groups from Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Deerfield and Highland Park to take the Polar Plunge.

Why would someone get in a bathing suit in March and jump into near freezing Lake Michigan waters? That is exactly what hundreds of people from Lake Forest, Deerfield, Highland Park, Lake Bluff, Bannockburn and beyond did Saturday at Lake Bluff’s Sunrise Beach and they had a good reason. Earlier: Polar Plunge Is a Day at the Lake Bluff Beach They were raising money to benefit the Special Olympics. Specifically, it was the Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge which is why the first wave of divers included Lake Forest Police Chief Jim Held, Bannockburn Chief Ron Price and members of their departments. “I’ve done this for eight years,” Price said of the 15-year-old event. “We raised $2,000 for the Special Olympics from Bannockburn.” In …

Teen Politico Attends Inauguration, Impresses Elders

Before she became a Patch blogger at Monday’s inauguration of President Barack Obama, Deerfield High School sophomore Lily Zacharias’s talent started a bidding war between Republicans and Democrats.

When you catch the political bug in third grade and start attending national leadership conferences in sixth, it should not be a surprise when both sides in one of the of the country’s hottest Congressional campaigns are bidding for your services as a high school freshman. That is what happened to Deerfield High School sophomore Lily Zacharias. Earlier: Patch Blogger Heads to Inauguration Not only were the teams of Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) and former Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) trying to get her aboard, but all of that experience gave her an opportunity to be part of history today as she attends the inauguration of President Barack Obama for a second term. Zacharias will be participating in the festivities as part of the …

Deerfield Native Pursues Naval Career

Deerfield High School grad is immersed in ups and downs of military career

There are not too many 16-year-olds who are part of their high school graduating class. There aren’t too many teenagers willing to forgo their summer break just so they can graduate early. And there aren’t too many Deerfield teens that pursue the military as a career. It may be unusual, but welcome to the world of Nathaniel Winstead. Winsted, 18, is continuing to swim against the tide in a literal sense as he has joined the Navy, instead of taking the more traditional path and going to college. “The respect that Nate had for people in the military was something he wanted for himself,” said his mother, Susan. “He amazes me.” Winstead is from a Deerfield family that has public service in its blood. His father Michael is a Navy reservist, who…

Warrior, Scout Champs Head to Yale

State champs Willis and Brown are stars in the classroom as well.

Illinois’ loss is Yale’s gain. The Land of Lincoln is losing two of its brightest stars—at least for four years—and high school state champions as Deerfield’s Jason Brown and Lake Forest’s Joe Willis head off to the prestigious Ivy League school Thursday. Willis won the Class 3A state individual golf title last fall. He also helped lead the Scouts to their second consecutive team title. Brown was in very similar circumstances. He won the state singles’ title in tennis and helped the Warriors to a fifth place finish. The duo, who live just miles apart, had never met until a Yale early decision party last December brought them together for a brief moment. “I talked to him briefly,” Brown said of Willis. “There were a lot of people there, but…
