Lake Forest celebrated Independence Day with a pie-eating contest, Rick Springfield Rock 'n Roll, and Red, White & Blue.
A good crowd enjoyed the expanse of Lake Forest's Deerpath Park with musical entertainment headed by 1980s rocker Rick Springfield, food from Lovell's of Lake Forest, a pie-eating cotest featuring pies from Sunset Foods and spectacular fireworks.

Kevin Bires is a quarterback with professional aspirations. The 9-year-old, a fourth-grader at Cherokee School in Lake Forest, also plays in the city’s youth football program and on a traveling soccer team. When it comes to picking between the sports, Bires wants the football in his hands whether he is running with it or throwing it. He also likes the homespun feeling of football. “If I ever make it as a professional, I don’t want to go to Spain and hear them say ‘Ole,’ ” Bires said. “And those horns are annoying,” he added, referring to the vuvuzela, also called the stadium horn, at last year’s World Cup soccer competition in South Africa.
