Tax Increase Approved by LFHS School Board

The 2013 tax levy was approved Tuesday at the LFHS School Board Meeting. Here's what you need to know.

The Lake Forest High School District 115 school board approved a 5 percent increase to the tax levy for the 2013-14 school year at its meeting Tuesday night. Because much of that money will come from new revenue due to the expiration of the city's Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district, the average homeowner will actually see about a 3 percent increase in property taxes from the approved increase. The TIF district in Lake Forest is the area around McDonalds, Sunset Foods and Everett Elementary School, including some residential properties. A TIF district is an area which has been blighted, and the city decided it would not develop it on its own. In an effort to build up the area, the city sells bonds and uses that money to build essential …

Gary’s five questions are well taken. Unionized teachers often outlast the school board volunteers, so every new board member must be reminded of the single-minded self-interest of teachers’ unions. Regarding Question 4: Taft-Hartley allows the “Fair Share” clause but does not require it. There is nothing that requires the school board to allow the union to turn teaching at LFHS into a protection…   more ›

Review: Lake Forest High School Teacher's Strike

While District 115 has posted its three-year proposal that includes projected salary increases, the teacher's union says its "not new."

It's been a little more than a month into the ongoing Lake Forest High School teacher contract debate. On Friday, District 115 posted its 3-year budget plan, including projected salary increases. Meanwhile the Lake Forest Education Association teachers’ union (LFEA), issued a statement saying this plan presents "no new news." According to LFEA spokesperson Chuck Gress, the union is hoping that collective bargaining session on Sept. 6 will better push the conversation forward. Whether or not the potential strike would impact IHSA sporting activities remains to be seen. One Patch reader and Lake Bluff resident submitted a letter to the editor questioning the agenda of the teachers' union. If you'd like to share your opinion on the debate, …

Professional company doubles its seating capacity in move to LFHS' west campus.

When the Citadel Theatre opens in its brand new West Campus space Nov. 5, there are a few things artistic director Scott Phelps will miss about the tiny 75-seat "grotto" theater the company will leave behind at the Gorton Community Center. Not among them: ∙ Having to choose small plays because the former stage in the Gorton Community Center basement was too small to support a large cast. ∙ Wondering if an actor was too tall for a part because his head might brush the lights hanging down from an 8-foot ceiling. ∙ Always being confused for CenterStage, the community theater that occupies the larger stage on the main floor. "I have absolutely no regrets about the theater I have done over the past seven years," Phelps said of the non-equity …
