Will Concealed Carry Increase or Reduce Gun Violence?

Recent armed robbery in Deerfield sparks debate among Patch readers.

A discussion broke out between Patch readers Tuesday in the wake of the armed robbery in Deerfield when two men walked into a Deerfield store Monday as one pointed a gun at employees and customers ordering them into a back room. Hadiya Pendleton's Mother to be Schneider's Guest at State of the Union

Hadiya, 15, was a Chicago honors student who was shot and killed last month. Schneider invited her mother as his guest. She will now be sitting, along with Hadiya's father, with Michelle Obama during the president's speech.

Chicago shooting victim Hadiya Pendleton's mother will be Congressman Brad Schneider's guest at Tuesday's State of the Union Address, according to his office. Hadiya, 15, an honors student at King College Prep in Chicago, was gunned down in a park last month about a mile from President Obama's Kenwood home. She had recently returned from his inauguration, where she had performed with her school band. Schneider invited her mother, Cleopatra Cowley, to attend Tuesday's State of the Union Address last week. The Chicago Tribune reported Monday that Cowley and Hadiya's father, Nathaniel A. Pendleton, will sit with First Lady Michelle Obama during the speech. Regardless of the seating arrangements, Cowley will be there as Schneider's guest, …

One Injured in Atlanta School Shooting: How to Stop the Violence?

Do you believe Obama's gun control proposals will help prevent school shootings?

Another school shooting took place in Atlanta Thursday, the Huffington Post reports. A student opened fire at Price Middle School, shooting a 14-year-old in the neck before being stopped by an armed officer at the school. This incident is the latest school shooting in recent months. Most notably, 26 people, mostly elementary school children, were gunned down at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. in December. The Newtown shooting sparked a nationwide debate over gun control. President Obama made several proposals regarding the topic in mid…

Readers: Curb Gun Violence By Controlling Criminals

We asked, you chimed in. Patch readers suggested various ways of fighting gun violence, from handing out tougher sentences to criminals who use guns to looking at the side-effects of psychiatric drugs.

Nearly a month after the horrific Newtown shootings, many people, regardless of their politics, are trying to figure out what they can each do to prevent similar tragedies in the future.  We invited readers to join our discussion on How Can We Each Fight Gun Violence? And many readers said curbing gun violence isn’t about getting rid of guns instead it starts with controlling criminals and handing out tougher sentences.  “Get rid of guns and you still have a crime problem. Get rid of criminals, and you won't have to worry about guns,” Patch reader Carl Castrogiovanni wrote.
