Northern Illinois has been hit with extremely hot weather this summer.
Remember when you could go outside and not worry about collapsing from heat exhaustion? The past week has seen temperatures routinely climb into the upper 90s and low 100s. Heat warnings have been issued. Cooling centers opened. Fireworks displays canceled. Ordinarily summer is something we in northern Illinois look forward to with great anticipation. It's much preferred to the long, gray, cold winter. Finally we get to go outside and do things and have fun. Not so much this year. This year summer has meant huddling indoors to shield yourself from the beating sun. And you can't just start your car and go. Now you have to start your car and let the air condition run for a while to cool it off before getting inside because the interior is …

Residents strongly advised to continue taking precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses, especially for the elderly, infants and young children, and those with physical or mental health issues.
Are you ready to say 'when' with this hot and steamy weather already? The extreme heat over the last few days has not only been unbearable as we zip in and out of air-conditioning, but could cause health-related illnesses if precautions aren’t taken. An excessive heat warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. tonight, The Weather Channel reports, and the forecast for today in Chicago’s north suburbs calls for a high of 98 degrees. Thursday temperatures topped out at 100, while on July 4th the high temperature was recorded at 103 degrees, according to the Chicago Weather Center. The extreme and humid temperatures can wear on us because of the gradual toll they take on tolerance and the natural ability for the body to cool itself off, …

The high heat this week offers ComEd customers a prime opportunity to reduce energy usage. Rather than simply cranking up the air conditioning to beat the heat, ComEd Energy Doctor Tim Melloch recommends customers take simple steps that can reduce energy usage and potentially help save on electric bills. Melloch also suggests turning off all unnecessary lighting, appliances and electronic devices to lessen heat in the home and save electricity. Those in the market for a new air conditioner should look for ENERGY STAR-qualified A/C units, which will be at least 10 percent more efficient than conventional models. It’s a buying decision that can translate into savings of $20 to $95 per year and also reduce the amount of greenhouse gas …

Chicagoland news to talk about: Big Brother contestant talks about being evicted.
When you’re hot, hot, hot, what should you do? Extreme heat is in the news this week. Woodridge Patch offers heat wave safety tips which include eating less protein. Algonquin Patch offers hot weather safety tips from the Centers for Disease Control. In other news, the Niles Police chief said his department has gone through an “emotional roller coaster” since one of its employees was charged with three felonies. Gary Amato, a civilian police employee, admitted fabricating his story about three assailants attacking him on his way to make a bank deposit, and instead taking the money himself. The odd crimes roundup in Northbrook Patch includes a 34-year-old Maywood woman who gave police a bogus name during questioning after a traffic stop…

I'll take summer anytime. I love walking outside seeing beautiful flowers and not dirty snow, leaving the house without bulky clothing, waking to birds instead of 3 inches of snow. Yep! Summer has my vote. Oh one more thing why did a simple statement have to bring political b.s.? Keep your opinions to yourself.   more ›
