Bring-in-the-New Year Beverages

Lake Bluff, Lake Forest experts share adult beverage brilliance to celebrate 2012.

No sooner do friends or family walk into your home on New Year’s Eve or Day, you’ll ask them what kind of drink do they want? Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Patch checked with local bartenders and corked-drink purveyors for their recommendations. South Gate Café manager Jonathan Eigenbrode said their “Tropical Escape” is an easy, affordable treat for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day brunch. “It gives you the flavor of summer in the wintertime. It’s a way to feature a rum drink – not very many people drink rum anymore – in very much a vodka community,” he noted. How to make it:  Eigenbrode’s also recommends Moet Chandon Champagne, Johnny Black Hot Toddy (Johnnie Walker Black, hot water, honey, and sugar) and Godiva Hot Chocolate (Godiva …

Bringing Mindfulness to the Holiday Season

Taking the time to sense the experience of the season.

For many people, Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day feels different than other times in the year. It often includes the most opportunities to eat and drink socially, opportunities we may wish would never end, or may wish would end sooner. Mindfulness practices, or practicing awareness without judgment, invite us to notice our behaviors in a new way. Mindfulness-based stress reduction has been effective as complementary care for many health conditions. Mindfulness-based eating programs have been effective in treating obesity.  This article will teach you two mindfulness-based eating practices. The first will take approximately 10 minutes, the second is one you can do while eating.  For the first practice, choose something small that will…

East Lake Academy Students Share Holiday Joy with Seniors

Take donated items to Maristella in Libertyville.

East Lake Academy students reached out to the community recently by visiting residents of several retirement and nursing homes in the area. Students caroled up and down hallways, handed out homemade Christmas cards and spiritual bouquets, and recited rosaries with residents from the Little Sisters of the Poor Care facility in Palatine, the Winchester House in Libertyville, and Manor Care in Libertyville. They even got to meet retired Bishop Andrew J. McDonald, who said mass for the residents and students at Little Sisters of the Poor. At 91, Sophie Poltrack Embodies the Spirit of the Season

Lake Forest senior doesn't want the fanfare for the caps and scarves she knits each year for others.

Sophie Poltrack doesn't want the fanfare, but there are 50 children who will be warmer this winter because of her knitting talents. For a good part of Sophie's 91 years, knitting has been as much an opportunity to help others as herself. There has been much change in her life over the past 12 years, including a move from her native east coast to Lake Forest to live with her daughter and her family, to losing her husband, to battling cancer in 2005. During all of that, knitting has been her refuge. Call it a sense of purpose. Something to look forward to. A tool to stay sharp mentally. They have all worked for Sophie. Even when Sophie accompanied the family to Florida over the recent Thanksgiving holiday, she brought her yarn. For years, …

Celebrate the Winter Solstice in Lake Bluff

Lake Bluff Open Lands Association invites the community to gather for its fifth annual winter solstice ceremony, bonfire.

While winter is the season of darkness, dormancy, and cold, the celebration of the shortest and darkest day of the year is an act of optimism and hope. The winter solstice is an opportunity to recognize nature’s rebirth that promises to follow. “There will be light. There will be warmth. The land will provide for us yet again,” said Larry McCotter, president of Lake Bluff Open Lands Association (LBOLA). LBOLA’s Winter Solstice Celebration will take place from 4:15-7:15 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 22) at the Skokie River Prairie, on the south side of Route 176 between Mariani Landscape and the water treatment plant. "Plan to join us at the Celebration,” said McCotter. “There will be fire. There will be warm beverages for the entire family. …

All I Want for Christmas is a Puppy!

Tips for new puppy owners when Santa brings a little bundle of joy.

When I was growing up, all I wanted Santa to bring me was a pony. Of course, Santa knew that a pony was not in the budget, so I had to wait until I was out on my own before the dream of owning a horse became a reality. For many kids, their Christmas wish is a cute, cuddly puppy under the tree on Christmas morning. If Santa makes their wish come true, here are some tips to remember: With the help of a good veterinarian and a reputable trainer, your new puppy can bring joy and happiness for many years to come. Patience, praise, and practice are the keys to determining whether your new puppy is “naughty” or “nice.” Happy holidays!
